Natural Birth

Finding a birth center to do v-bac impossible

I am getting frustrated. I really would like to do a natural birth in a birth center, but because of my previous c-sec i'm finding it really hard to find anyone. My first daughter was born vaginally, my second pregnancy I had twins and blindly listened to my ob and did the "only safe option" c-section. I am almost 5 weeks pregnant so I know I have time but everyone i call wont take me. I have found 2 birth centers about 45 minutes away but I have heard some not great reviews about them lately. I'm still going to meet them but i'm nervous about going there. I really don't feel comfortable doing it at home. (i would have some uninvited lookyloos) I just really wish there were more options for us v-bac girls.

  • What about finding a supportive midwife or doctor to do a VBAC in a hospital setting? Birth center and at home are not your only choices - there are good doctors out there too. Look for the closest ICAN chapter to help you find options: https://ican-online.org/

  • I will check into that website. I checked with nurse midwifes and doctors first, I am still looking at a few but most will not do it. So far i have only gone off recommendations from people I know so I don't have to go to some random person. It just is amazing to me how many doctors and midwifes won't even give you the chance.

  • That is kind of crazy you can't find ANYONE, especially considering you have a "proven" pelvis from a successful vaginal birth! I'm sure it's something to do with insurance in your area, though. Good luck, don't give up yet!

  • It doesn't really matter if most will not do it. You only need one that will.

Malpractice law suits kind of ruin things for everyone. I understand why care providers are driven to be overly conservative.

Ditto this.  I had a natural VBAC in a hospital with a fabulous VBAC-supportive OB and a doula.  If you have a local ICAN group, they can be an awesome resource.  Good luck!

ETA:  BTW, my section was for the exact same reason yours was--twins and not knowing any better. :-)

  • ICAN is great. The VBAC board on here is also good. If you share your general metro area, it's possible some one here might have a recommendation. In my area, there's a CPM pair that run a birth center that take VBACs, but the CNM-run birth center doesn't. That said, there's an amazing CNM hospital based practice with a 96% vbac success rate in my area and that's a higher success rate than the home birth practices, so I'll be going there.

  • I second looking up your local iCAN chapter. They can be a huge source of information. Even if you are unable to attend the meetings I'm sure there is someone you could contact that could put you in the right direction.

  • I know that my birth center won't do VBACs because their malpractice insurance won't let them. So it may not be an option if you are looking at CNM. I think you can have a VBAC in a hospital though if you find supportive providers. Good luck.
