Dentist?

I've been asked twice now by two different doctors if I have taken ds to the dentist yet. My husbands dentist also mentioned to start bringing him already. I thought they weren't supposed to go til age 2? He only has 7 teeth so I'm not sure if we should even bring him? Is it just for them to get use to it, or is it actually beneficial to start now? Ds loves brushing his teeth and we actually brush them twice a day [most days]. What is everyone else's plan?

Re: Dentist?

  • I asked the Dr. about this at our 15 month apt.  He said, 2 years.  I also asked about toddler toothpaste, he said 2 years.  DD brushes her teeth every day, LOVES to do it, she does hers while I do mine.  But the dr said it's hard to break the habbit of them swallowing toothpaste, so to just wait.

  • The new recommendation is 12 months.  I took DD at 18 months because I hadn't heard of the new recommendation until then.  DS went for the first time at 12 months.  Whether or not it is really useful to take them this young I think depends on the pediatric dentist you have.  Our first was excellent!  She was excellent with DD, she brushed and polished her teeth at the visits, and offered good tips for brushing and flossing DD's teeth.  I felt like we were actually accomplishing something with our visits, unlike our new one (we have since moved).  He has only counted the kids' teeth at our visits.

  • The dentist recommends a visit at year, but our pediatrician said 2 years should be fine.  I'm glad I waited to bring my daughter until she was two.  I didn't know what to expect, but it certainly wasn't a quick look, count, and brush (with a regular brush) for $200.  I know they looked for important things such as growth and cavities, but the whole visit lasted maybe 15 minutes, so seemed anticlimactic.
