Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Early Riser

Hi everyone,

I just read the sleep post below and everyone's responses have me thinking. My son is 5 months old. We start our bed time routine at 6 pm, and he's finally asleep by 7 pm. He wakes around 3 or 4 am for a diaper change and goes back to sleep until 5 or 5:30 am. He used to sleep until 7 am. I think that 5 am is way too early to wake up. He then stays up for 2 hours and takes a 2 hour nap. He naps for abou 4 hours a day. So, my question is how do I get him to sleep until at least 6 am? TIA!

Re: Early Riser

  • If he's awake for 2 hours then it sounds like he is ready to be up.  Have you tried bringing him to bed with you?  DS will generally sleep another hour or so with us.

    My DS is on the same schedule. He use to wake up at 7:30 and now he thinks 5:30 is the best time to get up. I just roll with it and hope that one day he goes back to 7:30. I at least know he will sleep in once he's a teenager, right? ;-)

    Then it's pay back time!  I thought you liked getting up at 5:30 sweetie!

    Haha, j/k, well sort of :)

  • Response: Sorry to have made a repetitive post. I follow this board, but I'll admit I often skip the sleep questions because I have no advice to give. Plus, I kind of feel that you just have to be flexible and follow baby's schedule, but then when I read the sleep post below and people's responses, I thought maybe there is something I can do to get that extra hour??

    He already sleeps in bed with me, and I usually just linger in bed with him until 5:30 hoping he'll fall back to sleep.

    When he wakes up for a diaper change, I breastfeed him and he falls back to sleep in a few minutes.

    I also breastfeed him when he wakes up, but he doesn't fall back to sleep then. I guess I'll keep these days in mind when he's a teen and doesn't want to wake up ;

    Based on your responses, what I'm doing is fine. Hopefully, he'll start waking up later again.

  • Some kids just don't sleep in. DD1 has been an early riser since day 1 and nothing we do can change it. She is down at 8 and up at 5 EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. It gets tiring, but I have learned to just adjust my sleep to hers. Luckily though she is also old enough to get up and laze about on the couch while she plays with her toys until 6 or 7.

  • I really wish there was some sort of miracle that would make DD sleep in, ha! I usually pull her into bed with me and try to get another half hour of sleep, but that seldom works. LO's wake up when they wake up, there is not much you can do to force them to change their natural schedules.

    My DS is wide awake and ready to party between 5:30 or 6. We've tried earlier bedtime, later bedtime... it just is what it is!
