My MIL usually keeps her opinions to herself.
But, there are these rules that we are supposed to follow when naming a Jewish baby. When picking the names of our kids, she actually has an opinion. Anyway, I told her our girl name was Ellie and it would be short for Elizabeth. Elizabeth was my middle name before I was married. IMO, it's honoring my mom more than anything because she chose the name for me. In turn I dropped it to have my maiden name as my middle name. So, I'm really not naming baby after myself. Elizabeth hasn't been part of my name for almost 6 years.
I don't think I really care about these naming rules she talks about. I'm over it. Dh and I like Ellie and that is that.
Am I being a grouchy pregnant lady?

Re: Annoyed.
Nope - one of my BFF's named her daughter Elizabeth/Ellie...DS's future wife, of course, so I'm partial to the name
Then again, I don't understand/know all of the Jewish naming rules, so I can't see both sides. I thought the big rule was about not naming a baby after a living person? Do middle names (or former middle names) even count for that?
We're not supposed to name after the living. I guess middle names and former middle names are in that category... The rules haven't ever been laid out for me very clearly.
Oh and I love that your BFF has an Elizabeth Ellie!
This is for your MIL
Hmmm. Did these naming conventions come up when you were naming the boys, or did you just happen to have names that fit the "rules," making it a non-issue before? Just curious as to whether or not she has always been outspoken about following the rules.
Either way, I'd be annoyed, too. Name the baby whatever you want!
My first thought is, your baby, your choice.
But then, I start to think about what I know about Jewish culture, and I know how important naming is. Although, as an outsider, it seems a lot of liberties are taken, such as just using a deceased person's first inital as opposed to their entire name, etc. I also think this depends on whether you followed "tradition" in the naming of your other children, etc. Also, isn't your boy choice a family name? Maybe your MIL is confusing herself or towing the line too tight.
I still think you should choose whatever name you like. She had her chance at naming kids.
As I recall, you guys are observant, yes? So, therefore, ask her where, exactly, is scripture to support her demands. If she can't, there's an extra in to tell her t go fly a kite. If she actually produces something, well, then, I don't know what to do. Ha! When I was pregnant my MIL told me I had to give the baby a "Catholic" name. Fine, except DH and I are not Catholic. LOL!
Best idea ever... Nevaeh Trinity because that's the perfect name for a Jewish kid.
It's been a combination of both. Liam is named after my grandpa who is still alive. But, that's my moms side of the family and they're Christian. They don't know about the rules. His middle name is Matthew which is after both my granny and DH's grandmother, both passed about 10 years ago. They both had M names. Jack is named after two deceased people.
Both middle names we have picked for a girl are family that have passed. The boy name is completely after family that have been gone for a while, 30 years or more.
