Brown Sugar water for consitpation?

Someone posted in the "baking soda bath for constipation" thread that they have been giving their child brown sugar water for constipation.

I never heard of this before.  Is this something pedi's really suggest??

Re: Brown Sugar water for consitpation?

  • I've heard sugar water (not sure if that's brown sugar) and I've also heard Karo syrup. I've never tried either though.

  • My ped recommended karo syrup which is pretty much just pancake syrup (the kind that isn't real maple syrup).  So it might be the same sort of thing.

Their bodies can't absorb all of that and so it works by pulling fluid into the colon and relieving the constipation.

  • See, our Pedi said to NEVER give her Karo Syrup.Something about it leading to diarrhea and the small chance of botulism spores.  It also grosses me out to think I'm pouring corn syrup down her throat.

  • Grosses me out too but ped said she actually wasn't absorbing any of it.

We put a Tbsp in a bottle.  It was last resort because nothing else was working.  We had constipation issues for about 2 months when starting solids until I finally tried probiotics.

  • I spoke with my cousin who is a pedi nurse (and has 2 young boys of her own) and she suggested giving about a tablespoon of mineral oil in DD's water or juice. This helps to grease the colon and soften the stool to make it easier to poop. Mineral oil is tasteless and odorless so DD didn't even know she was drinking it.

DD hadn't pooped in a week and we kept giving her prune juice mixed with oatmeal and we gave it to her straight from a bottle mixed with water. Still nothing and usually this had worked before. The mineral oil def worked. My cousin did say not to do this on a daily basis because it could strip the nutrients from her GI Tract. She said if she gets to a point were she doesn't poop in week, then it's okay. Basically to try the prune juice first and if all else fails, go with the mineral oil.
