PreE and low amniotic fluid

Does anyone know if preeclampsia can also cause low amniotic fluid? I am 34 weeks and have preeclampsia(mild, right now) I had an ultrasound today and everything was normal. But she did mention that my fluid was a 7 and was still normal but on the low side of normal. If it was a 6 she would of sent me upstairs to hydrate and notify my doctor. I drink tons and tons of water so I know I am not dehydrated. Now I am wondering if I am leaking. But how do I know I am leaking and its not just normal discharge?

Re: PreE and low amniotic fluid

  • Someone had a good tip yesterday, I don't remember who. Something about emptying your bladder and laying on your side and if you still leak then it's probably amniotic fluid? I don't know, and don't take my word for that at all because I think it's wrong... but hopefully she will spring up and share her tip again.

Why didn't you ask your doctor? I would call and ask them if you're concerned, but if the tech wasn't concerned enough to tell them than I wouldn't worry.

  • You can have both but I don't know if one causes the other...I had both. I would ask your doctor.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I would definitely talk to your doctor. At my MFM's office, anything below an 8 is considered abnormal. (They go on a scale from 8-25 being considered "normal" fluid.) I would do all I could to hydrate more, even if you feel like you're drinking enough water, drink more. But I would definitely talk to my doctor.

On another note, I don't think the two have much to do with the other, at least not to my knowledge. (And I have pre-eclampsia, and no one has said we need to watch my fluid even more now, although I do get weekly modified BPPs because I had to go on a diuretic for extreme swelling.)

ETA: I do want to add that high blood pressure can change your fluid levels, so possibly that side of pre-eclampsia could mess with them. Sorry for not thinking about that! But again, I do think you need to talk to your doctor ... Best of luck to you.
