Has anyone ever used a sitter service?

...like Care.com or SitterCity.com to find a babysitter??

We live far away from family, and I wouldn't ask my friends to watch my kids so I can go for a night out on the town. Anyone have luck using those websites to find people to interview for just an occasional sitter job?? I kind of just want a nice highschool girl that has a car and can come over every once in a while, but I have NO idea how to find one!

TIA!

We are in a similar situation.  Our parents watch DD sometimes but I feel bad always asking them.  It would be nice to have an actual sitter we could call up when we want to go out on the town.  But because no one except our parents have ever watched her, I am SO NERVOUS to go leave her with anyone!  I just picture some girl texting her boyfriend the whole time and some horrible accident happening.  I am anxious to read the responses you get!

We don't live near family either and have had great luck with both sittercity.com and care.com

You definitely need to weed through the applications but from my experience most of the younger people on the site are college students or grad students pursuing teaching degrees (or even some teachers loking for extra cash). Just make sure to set up an interview with them and you should be fine.

Can I ask how you do your interviews?  Like where are they?  Somewhere neutral like starbucks or at your house??  What do you ask and all that kind of stuff?  Finding a sitter makes me so nervous!  I trust no one.

  • We used care.com to find an "occasional sitter."  I guess we're very trusting people because we had the sitter come to our house to meet the kids.  A lot of it was based on time constraints.  We needed a sitter that next weekend.  She turned out to be wonderful.  Even our shy DD warmed up to her.

  • I used care.com and found a sitter we used for a few months. She is going back home from college and we no longer need her. Nice girl, but late almost every time so we won't be asking her back if we ever need anyone. We had no-shows for interviews and one who ended up being a flake before she started. I like it better then sittercity though. You just have to spend time weeding through the crappy ones.
