Allergies...

Hi all!  I am normally prone to migraines, but hadn't had any in a couple of months (knock on wood).  Yesterday, I had what I mistook for a migraine when I think it was really a sinus headache due to allergies.  I'm in upstate NY and everything is blooming right now so it makes sense.  I called the Dr. and they said to take Benadryl or Mucinex.  I took Benadryl and feel a lot better already!  Just curious if anyone else is struggling with the same thing and have found any non-medicated ways to treat it?  I'd prefer not to take anything, but I'm assuming it's okay if my Dr. said it was!

Re: Allergies...

  • I can't survive without Zyrtec. It's safe to take, and I took it with DS, too. The only non medicated tip for allergies I've ever heard is to eat a teaspoon of local honey every day. But it's not pasteurized, so that's not really safe during pregnancy.

  • I have had terrible, TERRIBLE skin hives with this pregnancy.  Its ridiculous and I cannot figure out any triggers.  They told me I could take Claritin or Zrytec everyday, but I have been trying not to everyday.  Sometimes I will take a Benadryl at night and it helps alot.  I keep seeing that the 3 above meds are safe.

I have taken zyrtec as needed and I also use the Netipot daily. I prep it before showering and use it in the shower so I don't have to worry about spilling/dribbling on my clothes with it! It really has been night and day allergy-wise for me since I started doing this daily. It's amazing the crud that comes out of your sinuses with the Netipot!
  • I like the Netti Pot too for allergies I've also used Claritin and that helps.

  • Thanks ladies!  I actually ended up missing almost an entire day of work yesterday due to a vicious cycle of morning sickness and allergies.  I took Benadryl this morning, and it has made me crazy tired, but also feel a lot better!

My allergies have been awful! I've been taking Zyrtec which I plan to stop within a week and hopefully I'll be ok, netti pot, and saline nose spray. I've also been sleeping with breathe right strips and a humidifier. I slowly feel like in returning to my old self so fingers crossed. Good luck!!

Try scratching your arm and see if you get a puffy line and hives where you scratched.  It took me two months to find out I was getting hives anytime i got little scratches.  I have to be extremely careful about scratching an itch because I then have a much worse problem. I think its called dermographism.  I get it everyday now that i moved to the desert but only dealt with it before when pregnant.  I wish I had known then.  It drove me crazy!

Anyhow, it might not be it but I thought I should share just in case.
