Trying to Get Pregnant

Could I be pregnant? I need to know because I have crohns

In early march I was feeling pretty hormonal and decided to give my body a break for a month from birth control pills which I have been on for 7 years now (which now I realize it doesn't work that way )

My fianc?e and I didn't use any backup but I thought since I had cysts as a young teenager and was told it could be difficult to have children one day(they didnt know and the reason why a few years laster I started going on the pill) and then the fact I didn't have a period yet, I was safe until my next period when I would start the pill again.

I got off the pill march 24th, withdrawal bleeding on the 31st and I had egg white mucus on the 24-26th of April ( which I later looked up to be fertile cm) we had unprotected sex on both the 24th and the 26th and by the Monday I really sore breasts and painful nipples and by Wednesday may 1 I had cramping....but both are probably too early symptoms correct?

Since then I have had really painful nipples and breasts, cramping, backache , lots of creamy cm, just the feeling that something if off....is this symptoms of coming off the pill, pms, or pregnancy symptoms? I took a test on Sunday early morning which would be either from the dates of the 24 and 26th, be either 8 or 10 depo but it was negative so again leads to me to think this is all really crazy pms symptoms from coming off the pill.

I'm just a little anxious because I have Crohn's disease and while I am not on any medicine at the moment, I do have trouble absorbing many vitamins and some nutrients and foods, specifically iron and b12 , which I have not been diligent as of late because of job changes for fianc?e and I, in getting my monthly shots so I know I am low and I want to know so not to endanger a baby if there is one!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks ! Again don't know what to think !

A blood test would be able to tell you better than we would.

  • I personally would probably test every other day or every third day until I got my period or a + test if it was something I needed to adjust my meds for.

Oh and to answer your question, you *could* be pregnant. If this is your first cycle off the pill, you may just have some crazy PMS. The cycles that I've had while not on BCPs are very different from when I was on them.

  • Negative test means not pregnant. You need to test every week until you get a positive, your period comes, or you hit 60 days without a period. Nobody here can tell you if you are pregnant.

Your cycle can be really crazy and unpredictable after coming off BC.

  • My advise to you would be to go to the store, buy a pregnancy test and pee on it. That's the only way you will know for sure if you really are pregnant. The symptoms you mention sound a lot like the symptoms I had my first cycle off the pill.

    BFP 7/5/13 ~EDD 3/17/14 - MC 7/22/13

DX PCOS 9/17/13 - Cyst on left ovary benched on BCP

10/12/13 Cyst is gone starting cycle #1 Femara - U/S shows no response

11/19/13 Large cyst on right ovary. Benched again.

12/18/13 2 cm cyst still on my right ovary. Back to BCP.

    1/10/14 start femara 5mg for 10 days

    No.

OP, a blood test is a waste of your doctor's time. If you hade a negative test on Sunday morning, you are not pregnant.

Test once a week until you get a postive or your period. If you reach 60 days without a period, call your doctor.

FWIW, the symptoms you described sound pretty normal--your body will need a few months to normalize after hormonal birth control.

An over the counter pregnancy test would tell her the samething for a lot less money too.

  • You don't need a blood test yet. If the HPT is negative then you're not pregnant now.

If you actually ovulated around the 26th, you could get pregnant but since you're not charting you don't know if you ovulated. You're right, the symptoms you felt around May 1st could not be pregnancy related 24 days after intercourse. Take a HPT once a week until you get a positive or your period starts.

Unless you want to get pregnant, you probably shouldn't have unprotected sex. Having cysts as a young teenager does not mean you will have trouble getting pregnant.

OP, don't take this chick's advice.

Better advice, as others have indicated, is that an HPT will be able to tell you if you are pregnant. We will not. There is absolutely no way that we could possibly know.

If I had health issues and were this concerned, I would get in with the doc, seeing as a blood test can tell earlier than a urine test. Of course, this also depends on the turnaround of their lab.  But don't take this chick's advice.

False. There are numerous tests on the market that detect pregnancy much sooner than a blood test does. That's why she shouldn't take your advice, because you don't know what you're talking about. A blood test is absolutely unnecessary. If she goes for 60 days without a period, then it's time to call the doctor. But until then, pee sticks every couple of days or so will work just fine.

actually I am not on any medication just have some low iron levels and b12 levels....I have taken a test on Sunday, which would be 8dpo or 10dpo, if, I ovulated when I thought it did because I did have egg white mucus....

i know this forum can't "diagnose" me but I went here for support to see if it could still be pregnant even though I took a test OR maybe someone has had experience with coming off the pill and this is what can happen afterwards....

i am 26 , engaged and although we aren't trying, a baby wouldn't be unloved or unwelcome....

Again, I am going to retest again but have no idea if because I got a negative, I am definitely not pregnant  or really bad symptoms of pms or coming of the pill, even though I came off of it 6 weeks ago....

If you are low on iron etc. it might be a good idea just to start taking a daily prenatal vitamin. Even if you are not trying to get pregnant it won't hurt. (actually it will make your nails and hair stronger. At least it does for me.) That way if you have a scare or an accident you won't be worried. Good luck.

I'm lurking, but I have Crohn's as well and am currently untreated because my insurance won't cover my pre-existing condition quite yet. I wanted to add that even if you aren't TTC, you really need to take care of yourself by taking your vitamins and nutrients everyday, especially if you know what you're low on. Iron is a huge deal, so you need to take care of that ASAP if you're going to be having unprotected sex.

You also need to monitor your flares because if you're in a flare and happen to get pregnant, you're not going to have the greatest pregnancy because you'll be more prone to having flares. I know it really sucks, I honestly do, but with a disease like Crohn's, you should really be covering all your bases.
I should also add that I get these symptoms every month and it doesn't have anything to do with pregnancy or Crohn's, it's usually just PMS. Only time and a test will tell.

    Please take care of yourself.

  • OP, I think you've gotten some really good advice and hopfully if you're not pregnant you'll be sure to protect yourself until your stress dies down and you're able to treat your diease properly and are able to plan your pregnancy.

This post does make me want to rant a little. I read an article that had a study a while back, I will try to find it, that had found that some ridiculous number of late teenage to early twenties young women were convinced that they were infertile or would have great trouble getting pregnant. Generally because they went to a GYN as younger teenagers to deal with benign cysts, longer bleeding times or irregular cycles and were told they might have trouble getting pregnant later in life. They wouldn't get it checked out again because they weren't yet trying to get pregnant, but would cling like a sailor to a piece of driftwood to the thought " I can't get pregnant." And they would have sex and not get pregnant, but then one day timing was right and they would. And be totally shocked that the problems they may have had when younger didn't carry over. I know 3 eome in my circle of friends who had nothing but a vague feeling and problems when they first started their periods who would have sworn up and down that there was no way they could get KU, all have kids now. On the other side, it's what leads people to come here and swear they must need medical intervention after 3 month of trying. End rant. And sorry for tge spelling and TL;DR, am on mobile.

If you have health concerns you should be using protection so you don't have a pregnancy scare. If you want to not try not avoid you should touch base with your doctor about precautions you should take. You should be on vitamIns too if you are having unprotected sex.

    Just a thought.

    Good luck

Agree with pp.  I was one of those told it would be difficult/impossible to get pregnant at 19.  Luckily, I got a new doc at 22, who told me to not worry until I was ready and keep safe till then.  Turns out, I do have fertility problems from PCOS, which has been easily treated...  Since it's been 6 weeks, that doesn't mean you are pregnant for sure.  It can take a while for things to regulate coming off the pill. As others have said, you should test at home for now, focus on getting yourself healthy, and use protection until you're ready.  Also, since I've had a few scares myself (long cycles tend to make you constantly worry), I know that having a pregnancy scare can get that clock ticking, so please take some time to consider that you aren't ready yet and think about more long-term plans for it.
