Trouble TTC

Moving on..IVF, Ovarian drilling, OHS injections

I've been slacking a little lately on posting on this board. Mainly because I've been depressed by everyone around me with BFP. So third IUI was a bust.  I had my consultation with my RE. We have decided on IVF. But now that I've been searching on here, looks like many of you have gone through the injectables before IVF. Is that more of a cost issue or recommended by the RE? He actually put my options in that order. IVF, ovarian drilling, and then the Ovarian hyper stimulation injections. I would have thought IVF would be the last resort,  then the injectables first. Next time I should write down my questions because I get so caught up on just having a BFP like yesterday I don't clearly think things through.

If anyone doesn't  mind just giving a ballpark on how much their IVF cost just so I can prepare myself. I was told approx $9,000 for just 1 cycle. Which doesn't mean a guaranteed pregnancy.

Also what did you do next after 3 failed IUIs?

thanks!

Re: Moving on..IVF, Ovarian drilling, OHS injections

  • We did one hybrid cycle of Femara + injects + TI.  That saved us a lot of money b/c I only used injects for a few days.  I got 2 follies but a BFN.  We had also done 3 IUIs by the time we decided to move on to IVF. We didn't go through treatments in the standard textbook progression for various reasons (see my siggy for details).  We opted not to do an injects only cycle because of costs, we decided to put the $ towards IVF.

I did a shared risk program which gives us 6 tries.  It was $21,000.  Would have been $1,000 cheaper if we didn't do ICSI.  Meds for my first cycle were not included and they cost about $3,400.  I also paid $400 for the anesthesiologist.  I believe if did just one IVF the cost was around $12,000 + meds + anesthesia. I was told meds run between $3,000 - $5,000 depending on what you are on.

I have never heard of ovarian drilling.  I am surprised they offered IVF before ovarian hyper stimulation with injects because it's so much more expensive, but it does give the highest success rate.  Good luck with your decision.  You may also want to post your question about IVF costs on the IF board.

  • We are in progress in our first round of injects after failed Clomid/IUI cycles. We will try at least one more before IVF.
  • We just had our consult last week after 3 failed IUIs. Our RE highly recommended IVF but said if we didn't feel comfortable making that step we could do injects IUI. He said its not something he really recommends doing unless there are strong barriers to IVF cost, religious objections, etc . His reasons were:
1 with injects you run risk of higher order multiples and with IVF you can better control that risk since you control how many you transfer don't remember the stats he gave us on risks of mulfiples and HOM on injects, but we did discuss them
2 success rates; the odds he quoted for 3 injects IUI cycles were only slightly higher than my Clomid IUI odds and both were lower than projected success with 1 IVF cycle
3 its the only way we can truly evaluate my egg quality which we suspect is part of our problem
He did brimg up cost in that if you're trying to save money by the time you go through three more IUIs as well as all the meds that we're not really saving that much...especially with the odds we have making it more likely than not that we'd have to move on to IVF anyways.

  • We had 3 failed Clomid+IUI cycles and our RE recommended going straight to IVF over trying injects.  When I asked him about this, he said that injects would not give us a higher success rate than the previous IUIs and because we are dealing with some MFI...we should save the money and spend it on IVF instead.

We took all this into consideration and have our IVF consult this afternoon.  Not sure when we will actually start the process, just getting the info now.

My Dr told me these options when I went for 1st consult (in order of success rates from least to highest): clomid/IUI, Injectables/IUI, IVF. After 3 failed injectables/IUI, I would move onto IVF.

I was told IVF would be $12K OOP but my insurance does cover $10K
