Toddler seasonal allergies

Is anyone facing seasonal allergies with their LO?  I swear DD has them... she gets so snotty that she coughs and has trouble sleeping.  It happens after we've been outside a lot and when the trees are in bloom.  Her old pedi said littles don't get allergies, but I dont' buy it...... anyone have any experience here?  TIA!

Re: Toddler seasonal allergies

  • Here! Liquid Zyrtec is our best friend during allergy season!

  • Littles absolutely get allergies! There are different opinions on when they actually come in to play though. I work for an allergy/asthma office and asked one of the pediatric allergists once when seasonal allergies can show up in children and I'm pretty sure he told me age 1. A lot of our pediatric patients take the children's Zyrtec with relief.

My Dr. said it is rare that they show allergies this young, but it can happen.  However, he won't let me give anything to L because the allergy medicine given to kids can actually make them super grumpy from what he told me and what I have read about it online.  He also said it can cause some strange feelings that they can't describe, so he prefers not to have kids younger than 2 on it.  I will say he is super conservative.  I do have several friends whose kids take Zyrtec.

  • Laney's skin test at the allergist reacted to pollen and grass. It was a big reaction. Zyrtec is great for her. Her allergies make her wheezing flare otherwise.

  • Yeah, it's the chest congestion with runny nose and cough for us too.... Is the zyrtec perscription?  is there a kids form of it?  Thanks!

  • There is a children's Zyrtec. Laney was around 23ish lbs when the allergist told us to give it and she takes 1.25ml. It's OTC.

  • DD definitely has some seasonal allergies. Her nose runs like crazy and her eyes water/get goopy if we've been outside playing in the grass for any length of time. We gave her benedryl to help her sleep the other night, but plan to discuss other possible options at her 15mo appt in a couple weeks.

We have done Benadryl at night once or twice when Nolan has been super congested.  It worked okay.  It can have the opposite effect on some kids thoug and make them wired instead of sleepy.
