Epino?

Has anyone used or heard of the Epino? Apparently it is a device that slowly stretches out your perineum area to help avoid tears. It is only available in Europe and Asia. A friend of ours is a labor and delivery nurse practitioner who says that her practice recommends it to her patients if they can get a hold of one or recommends using a new anal plug as an alternative small to larger towards the end of the pregnancy to essentially stretch out the area. First I thought no way! But after i hear about the results of damage that can be caused to the pelvic floor during birth, Im interested. Has anyone heard about or used a device like this???

Re: Epino?

  • I'm mobile so the device is called Epi No.

  • Yeah haven't heard of it and probably wouldn't use it. You can do perineal massage towards the end of third trimester to achieve similar results. I still tore. It's luck of the draw, IMHO.

Just like stretch marks, skin elasticity is genetic. I would think the same concept would apply.

I don't know if you can stop from tearing... I second the notion that its like stretch marks. I mean, how much can you prepare for an 8 lbs baby coming out? I couldn't get my 8lbs 8 oz daughter out no matter how much the nurses and doc tried to avoid the episiotomy. In the end it had to happen to deliver. Seriously, they spent almost and hour trying to work her out. And my son, who was 9 lbs 11oz, came so fast, I'm lucky they caught him.
I had internal tearing and brusing that couldn't be helped. Just too big of a baby.
But all in all, I healed. And yes I was sore for a couple weeks, maybe a month. But I took care of my self and healed and it wasn't the worst thing ever. The pain of child birth is.... Haha
  • Sounds like there are a lot of factors that go into whether someone tears or not that cant be controlled.

We just started our hypnobirthing class and just touched into the whole breathing the baby down and not forcing the baby down through aggressive pushing talk.

As a FTM, it did cause anxiety because this is all so foreign to me! Looked into the massage thing and will keep asking around about the Epi No to see if anyone used it. I guess it's worth a try. Not like it can hurt anymore right?

Oh boy! I'm hoping my baby will be very healthy and have a perfectly shaped head and body weight to torpedo out of there while leaving me intact. Not too much to ask right?
