Babies: 9 - 12 Months

need advice

Ok so we decided to go visit my grandmother about 8 hours away at the end of the month because she's not doing so well and I haven't seen her in many years. She never met my husband or my 9 month old so it's really important to me that she does before she passes away. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make our trip as smooth as possible. We are driving so I was thinking of bringing toys and snacks but not sure past that. He hates being in his car seat for long periods as it is. Any advice?

  • Can you leave at night when he's used to sleeping? Or maybe drive four hours take a couple hour break, so he can stretch his legs and move around, then finish driving.

I agree with the PP. If you can drive overnight, I would do that.

We visit family 4 hours away and we leave our house early in the morning so he'll go back to sleep, and leave to come home at bedtime.

That's probably the easiest way if it's doable.

  • We drive from NC to NJ fairly regularly.  Without kids, it's a 7 hour drive, so pretty close to what you're doing.  Through much experimentation, we have found that the best method is this: Pack the day before.  On the night you are leaving, put the kid(s) to bed at regular time.  Then go to bed as soon as possible.  We get up at 3am and do the last bit of packing (like toiletries), then wake the kids and leave.  The kids sleep for about three hours, then we stop for breakfast.  Then we continue on.  Entertainment includes the DVD player, lots of books, magnadoodle, Leappad for the 3 year old, puppets.  We usually have to stop for lunch also, and end up getting there around 1pm (total of 9 hour drive).

We tried driving overnight, but that is hard.  Neither DH nor I sleep well in the car, and the kids don't sleep any later in the morning, so DH and I are exhausted.  Even if my parents could physically care for the kids, there is no keeping them quiet.  So driving overnight just didn't work for us.  Leaving in the middle of the night makes us kind of tired, but not flat out exhausted.
