Camping at 22 weeks pregnant w/ twins-how realistic?

Hi

DW (who is the pregnant person in our Dynamic Duo) wants to plan a camping trip for mid/late July, when she'll be about 22 1/2-23 1/2 weeks pregnant. I have a sneaking suspicion her wants and needs may change by that time, but we are planning now, so I just thought I'd ask some of you ladies - what are the odds you would have wanted/been able to camp at that point in your pregnancy?

I know everyone experiences pregnancy differently, but I'm just curious if this is the sort of hands down, no brainer, not gonna happen scenario, or if it's not as crazy as it sounds.

Thanks!

Re: Camping at 22 weeks pregnant w/ twins-how realistic?

  • I felt pretty big, but still manageable at 22/23 weeks.  Can you time a doctor appointment before you go, to ensure everything is fine and she won't need any emergency trips to a doctor while you are gone?

Other than that, a super comfortable place to sleep, tons of water and fans to stay cool... It sounds like fun!

  • Ugh, that sounds miserable to me! That's exactly how far along I was when we took our Disney World trip, and let's just say we rented a wheelchair for me. :p

  • I think it would be very relaxing but I heard a horror story of a gal preg with twins delivering at 22 weeks while camping because of an IC. So, yes be sure to be checked as close to departure time as possible. These twins can cause all sorts of issues I wouldn't think of in a singleton. I'm sorry to be the downer, I know it will probably be a relaxing uneventful trip filled with wonderful memories! As far as size, I would have been fine to go camping at 22 weeks!!

This!  I wasn't feeling bad at that point, but if I was to have gone on a vacation it would've been something very relaxing and pampering, not camping.

    Completely agree!

  • Thanks everyone. Now I have to think of a nice way to inform her of this without sounding like a micromanager...feel free to suggest your ideas! Like how would you have liked your DH or DP (or dear whomever) to tell you that other MoMs thought camping at that point would be some point on the line between frightening and miserable?

We are planning the trip this week, and maybe I can gently suggest some alternative ideas...

    Thanks!

  • I couldn't even go outside for more than 20 minutes at that point because it was so hot in NYC last summer. I downed jugs of water just sitting in the a/c! I also went into PTL at 23 weeks. I vote err on the side of caution.

I went camping at 20 weeks, and it was fine.  We only camped for a night, though, and it was November so heat wasn't an issue.  The worst part was that I had tons of layers of clothes on and had to pee every 2 hours!

I couldn't imagine how I could get comfortable.

  • I'm 25 weeks along with a fairly easy pregnancy. It would need to be a comfortable camping style trip with an easily accessible bathroom in the middle of the night. Cell service and a hospital would be a must have also. You just never know. I also can't walk very long, I get tired or round ligament pain. So, no hiking.

A spa weekend trip would be more realistic and comfortable. We have some great spa resorts with a lodge feeling in the PNW out in the Olympics and not too far from hospitals.  Something like that.

  • Depends on how "rustic" the accommodations will be.

In a bed in a cabin? Sure, sounds like fun.

In a tent on the ground? Not even when I'm not pg, haha.

I love camping and I think it's totally doable at 22weeks.

I would make sure it wasn't too far away from everything, water, snacks and a site close to the bathroom.

Oh, and a lake to stay cool! GL with whatever you decide.

  • Thanks everyone. Since this is likely our last vacation without kids I really want it to be what she wants, and what she really wants is one last "normal" pacific northwest summer of hiking, biking, and camping and generally enjoying the coastal glory after 10 months of gloom. I don't want to crush her dream, but I don't want her to be miserable trying to live it out either!

  • I just went camping at 31 weeks. High was mid 70s. We have a pop up camper for sleeping but stay outside the rest of the time. We picked a "handicap friendly" location that had paved camping spots and paved roads. Now I couldnt go on any trails more then half a mile but I could easily walk the mile plus loop of camping spots. It was nice. I drank tons of water and sat and read.

  • I went last summer at 19 weeks.  It really wasnt bad.  We picked a spot close to the bathrooms and bought an air mattress that doesnt sit on the ground.  The worst part was that it rained most of the time which meant a lot of sitting around and there wasn't really anywhere comfortable for me to just sit around.  Otherwise it was fun, we went on shorter hikes than usual.  This July we are taking our 8 mo olds camping for the first time.

  • I would have loved to have gone camping around 22 weeks! Depending on how much time is between now and her 22 week mark she probably can gauge what she's capable of. Ditto all the gals who have advised getting checked out first and not going too deep into the wild, but this will be your last chance to go for a while, so if she's feeling good, go for it!!...unless you'd prefer a different kind of baby moon, which would make this a different issue for you guys to discuss. A nice fatty queensized air mattress would be highly recommended, though! Best of luck to you guys!

this ;)  I mean, unless her idea of camping is in the rv, at a resort with a lake :)  but the 'roughing it' camping that we did growing up, I would not have been able ot partake in at 22 weeks.  18 weeks, maybe ;)

God gave me a double portion for my inheritance with my little Mighty men :) 9/19/10 Baby A born at 1:47 am 6lbs 14oz, 20.5inches long. Baby B born at 3:20 am 6lbs 6oz, 19.5inches long. My double blessing!:)

  • Our camping style is about halfway between roughing it and glamping. But maybe there are things I could do to make it a little closer to the glamping end...

Thanks for this advice. I think we can take it kind of one week at a time, and just have an alternative plan in mind just in case.

  • I went camping at 22 weeks and it was in October, poured the entire time and was freezing at night. It absolutely sucked having to pee every hour but it really wasn't too bad. Just make sure you have a good place to sleep!

being a native Montanan and outdoor girl myself i understand what she wants.  maybe a compromise would be a bed  and breakfast close to all the activities and areas you love. she can enjoy outdoor fun and you have the piece of mind that your close to at least phones and help if needed, not to mention  comfy bed, i  am at 21 weeks,  love camping and i cant imagine being comfortable in a tent, i would never get off the ground if i got down. enjoy your trip!
