January 2013 Moms

At what point should I be concerned

Mr C is just coming off of a huge growth spurt. He was eating like a champ, up to 32 oz a day from his usual 24oz a day!! Now today he has barely eaten. Since waking up at 6am he has only had 13oz. He's happy but def a little cranky but he's still active and vocal. He has spit up more today than usual according to my mother. I am calling the doc first thing if this continues through the evening to tomorrow morning.

Just when I feel we are making progress I feel like we have a set back. At what point should I be concerned?

Re: At what point should I be concerned

  • I would be concerned if he can't hold anything down, is exhibiting signs of dehydration, seems to be in pain, or is having a lot of extreme vomiting episodes.  I don't think I would be concerned quite yet from what you've said, but I would definitely keep an eye on things.  Babies get into weird funks sometimes for whatever reason.  It will probably just pass.

  • I know when babies have reflux they don't eat as much because they're not feeling well. Could he be gassy or something like that? C rarely spits up or vomits but today he slammed down seven ounces then spit up little chunks which was totally gross and weird since he's on breastmilk only. Hasn't done it since though so I assume he just upset his stomach by chugging it all down in ten minutes. I'd definitely keep an eye on him but don't panic yet, momma! :)

I went to the doc on Friday b/c my LO had similar issues (except the spitting up). She was crying on and off all day and only ate 10-12 oz (she is breastfed so that is an estimate). I went in and the doctor though she was just a little constipated. She was totally fine the next day.

This. My biggest thing would be paying attention to the number of dirty diapers.

Also, I am glad to hear your LO normally eats 24oz Smile Some mamas have mentioned their babies eating 30+ and I thought DS should be eating more!

I assume they're formula babies when the moms say that. They need more formula to match what they'd get from our breastmilk. C only does between 20 and 30 ounces most days and he's at 13 weeks now.

Mr C is a formula baby now and is the most finicky eater. Thankfully he's gaining weight right on track. If that means he only eats 23oz so be it. It's def stressful worrying about it though

I honestly don't know how much DD eats throughout the day total, but she's still taking 4oz at a time and is sleeping 11-12 hours overnight the last handful of nights.  Although she does take a 6oz bottle in the AM after that, her little tummy is hungry!  I can't imagine that she eats much more than around 24oz/day.  Everyone is different and that's okay :)

How's your LO this morning, Golds?

  • As long as he's having plenty of wet diapers, I'd just ride it out.
