  I think so. He is identifying something with a sound. If he made the noise you'd know what he was talking about.

  This. My 15 month old can't do animal sounds yet, although he has other words.

  My doctor says yes.  At 20 months, various animal noises make up about half of DD's vocabulary.

  I would say absolutely. As well as their own made up words used consistently. Katherine always calls dogs 'aff aff', probably from me saying 'look, a doggie woof woof' and I am toally counting that as a word.
