My pedi gave us a packet of info about how to introduce solids at our last appt. We probably won't start until closer to 6 months but I was reading through the packet anyway. Well a lot of it was great....lots of research explaining the benefit of delaying solid food, etc. Then when I got to the feeding schedule I was confused. It listed rice cereal (which I thought we were supposed to avoid now a days?), fruit, then vegetables. I always assumed you should do veggies before fruit. What were you told or what did you end up doing?
Re: s/o Introducing solids
There really isn't much nutritional value to the rice cereal, other than the BM or F used to make it. We used it first just to get her used to the idea of eating, rather than just drinking. It made it really easy, I think because it was a flavor she was already used to, but then DD loves to eat.
We also did veggies first, and are just about to start proteins, and then will do fruits. This was suggested by our Ped, as well as many friends, for the reason PP stated: if you start with fruits, LO may only want food that tastes sweet. I haven't looked up research on it, but my good friend had this issue with her DD2. She had done veggies first with DD1, who now loves them, but didn't think about it with DD2. DD2 is now almost 4, and it's still a b!tch to get her to eat veggies. She sticks to fruit and carbs, and will leave the veggies and proteins on the plate.
I tried rice cereal mixed in BM first just to get DS used to eating but it just upset his stomach and caused him to spit up. I switched to the Gerber Oatmeal and Banana cereal and he liked it a lot.
Although I agree with the others that there's really nothing to back up if veggies should be given first over fruit due to the yumminess of fruits, I did start with veggies too. I believe I started with steamed and pureed carrots. After that I would switch to a fruit, then a new veggie, and so on. DS is a marvelous eater. There is very little he does not like.
I started solids with DS when he was 5 months old and back then (that makes me sound old) I never heard of BLW. I'm willing to try it with DD so I'm going to wait until she is six months old, but I might just do a mixture of purees and BLW.
