Babies: 3 - 6 Months

xp: so lost.....

This little man has my brain running in circles, with no end in sight.

First thing in the morning, he never "eats" a full meal like he normally does because he gets super distracted and starts talking.

Then, for the last week, he is eating very little compared to his normal time at the breast. He pulls off upset and arching away from me. If I try to make him continue the meal, he just screams and continues to arch.

i will put him down to play, the try to feed him again before his nap, but the same behaviour occurs.

It makes me feel so worried he isn't getting enough to eat. He seems happy. He is pooping huge in the mornings and his afternoon poops are still there, just a little less.

And he hasn't played catch up at nights... In fact, last night he slept for 8 hours, 9 hours after he ate.

We EBF and I broke down today and he ate his first ounce of formula.... That's all he would take after another attempt to BF.

I am so lost. I have been making him eat more often, but he still just comes off crying. I have been treating him for teething because he has been showing signs...

Help!

  • If hes still making wet and dirty diapers i wouldn't worry. babies get more efficient at BFing as they get older

This. Also, KellyMom has a good page on 'is baby getting enough milk'. From what you described, your LO is doing fine.

  • This sounds just like my DS last week. He wouldn't nurse, wouldn't take pumped milk in a bottle. I brought him in three times in a week and a half. He was gaining weight. He just seemed to be going through a growth spurt. He's totally back to himself these last two days. I'm sure it will be no time that you'll see him go back to his normal routine.

  • Try feeding him on your lap facing you sitting up. I think dd thinks I'm going to put her to bed and will do this, it's hit and miss, but this does help. I've also been bringing her to my bed for her morning nurse, she eats more now.

At around 4 months my EBF son did the same thing.  I made myself and him crazy trying to get him to eat more for a few weeks.  As pp suggested he seemed to just get really efficient at nursing over night.

My daughter has been nursing less frequently (every 3 hours) and for less then 10 minutes/session as well as sleeping longer at night the last 2-3 weeks as well. It seems to be normal at this age.  This time around I am just going with the flow.  As long as your son is having enough wet and poopy diapers just relax and try to let your LO lead.
