Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 Month Old Naps (lack of)

My DD naps a TOTAL of about 2 hours a day.  Usually about 4 long 30 minute naps a day. Her last nap today ended at 3:45 and she went to bed at 7:15. Very long waketime..

i know every baby is different but how many hours does your LO nap each day? What about hours of night sleep? I feel like she is always tired during the day.

Also, did your LO used to catnap and now takes longer naps?? Hoping maybe in the next couple months naps will lengthen.  I barely have time to shower before I see her little eyes glowing on the video monitor!

Noah typically gets approx 4 hours of naps on a good day. He naps 3 times, the last one being a catnap of 30-40 mins. He sleeps about 11-12 hours at night, which usually includes one MOTN feeding.

How long are her waketimes? For N, he goes down after 1 1/2 hours max usually in the morning. His second and third naps come after 2 hrs of waketime max (usually an hour and 45 mins). Before bedtime, it's also usually about 2 hours when we put him down.

  • Same as PP with about 1.5 to 2 hours of wake time as once, so she sleeps 4 or 5 times during the day. DD goes to daycare and naps terribly there... Sometimes as little as 15 minutes total the whole day. She typically sleeps about 10 or 11 hours.

this is what I'm afraid of since DD starts daycare in 2 weeks...her crappy naps getting crappier! After waking, she's up for 1 hour before nap 1.  But then since her naps are  so short, she can usually only last about 1 1/2 hours between naps.  I've tried everything to get her to take a late afternoon nap before bedtime but doesn't work.  Which is why she is usually awake about 3 hours before bedtime.

I replied in a different thread about DS's napping (in regards to the 4 mo wakeful), but I'm interested to see responses here on how everyone else's LOs are napping.

DS STTN (10-12 hours) but started napping crappy during the day.  He is usually only able to stay awake about 1 - 1/2 hours at a time, and then naps for 20-30 min typically.

Yes this is exactly what DD does! It's been going on for over a month now.  I'm ready for some long naps, but not sure it's ever going to happen

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the STTN and definitely wouldn't trade it for better napping, but it really makes it hard to get anything done during the day!

This is my 3rd baby and with my 1st and 3rd they were/are very much like this.  Nap for 45 min @ 3-4 times a day.  However, bedtime is at 7pm and they were/are up at @ 7am (waking maybe once) so I never thought it was odd since most babies this age don't sleep that well at night.  Also, mine were not cranky.  My 2nd child at this age took 2 naps and one being a 2 hour nap and she was the same way- slept long at night and was never cranky.  For my 1st, it wasn't until he was @6-7 months old that I was getting a guarenteed 1 hour nap in the morning and 1 hour nap in the afternoon.

As for getting things done, I have 3 under the age of 4 and do at TON of prep work at night after bedtime and I always shower prior to them waking up.  My youngest is 4 1/2 months old and I never allow her to sit in her saucer for more then 10 minutes at a time without me physically interacting with her (its common for her to be in my kitchen in it while I prep lunch- or I just allow her to scoot around the floor).  Its good for her to get her alone time with herself and it also allows me to get somethings done as well.  You'd be amazed what you can accomplish in 10 minutes!!

  • DS will be 6 months this week.  He was doing catnaps when he was between 3.5-4 months.  It was so bad that I ended up doing sleep training on him (I was bouncing him for up to an hour to get him to nap, and he would only nap for 20-30 minutes).

I don't know if the sleep training helped, or just a matter of time... but DS started lengthening his naps gradually.  From 20 minutes to 30 minutes, then to 45 minutes.  By around 4.5 months, he started taking 90+ min naps.

Now at almost 6 months, he mostly naps 1+ hr at a time, sometimes longer.  A few times a week he'll only do a 30-min nap and he'll be all cranky when he wakes up.

On average, DS sleeps 13-14 hours a day.

  • Thanks everyone for your input.  When she woke after only 30 minutes during her afternoon nap today and immediately started crying, I let her go.  I do put her down drowsy and she puts herself to sleep by thumb sucking.  So after a little while she started sucking her thumb and fell back to sleep!

Alot of times she wakes after 30 minutes and doesn't cry, but just plays around in her crib forever so I just give up and get her. Hopefully she will nap better upon starting daycare in 2 weeks!
