Name advice...

So, my husband and i are kicking around a few boys names and we love one in particular - Adin.

Here's the question... traditionally the name is pronounced (Ah-din) but we would like to pronounce it (Aid-en). The spelling of the name (Adin) is important to us because it is the Hebrew spelling of the name. So, any spelling variations like Aiden, Ayden, etc are out.

Is it too confusing to have it spelled Adin and pronounced Aiden? Thoughts?

Re: Name advice...

  • I don't think so. I pronounced it as Aiden when I first read it, so I think you're okay.

The first thing I thought was "I wonder if she knows she spelled it wrong". I think it looks like it's pronounced A-din, not Aiden. Sorry.

  • I pronounced it Ah-den... not aiden... I find the spelling will throw off how people reading it will pronounce it. But id you and DH like it then he will correct people on how you pronounce it... NMS but I say go for it if its important to you guys!

  • I first read it as Aahden. Aiden is a really popular name and I think the Adin spelling will be confusing. His teachers and peers will get used to it though. I've seem some insane spellings!

Me too, but I also thought "argh, another alternative spelling; however, with your explanation it makes total sense to me why you would spell it that way.

  • Two thoughts:

    1) No, I don't think it will be confusing.  I think that because of the popularity of Aiden/Aidan, people will assume that it's another spelling or a unique spelling of the same name.

    2) Personal thought here, but if the name Adin is pronounced "Ah-din" and not "Ay-den," why not pronounce it the way it's supposed to be pronounced?  I understand your not wanting to change the spelling, but it seems to make more sense and be less confusing to just pronounce the name the way it is traditionally.

Lol... i was totally worried about this as well.

I appreciate all the advice. We really love it but I also don't want to give my kid a name he has to struggle with his whole life.  Hmmmm....

We just really like the sound of (Aid-en) vs. (Ah-din). To be honest... when we first came across the name we thought it was pronounced (Aid-en). Whoops! :)

I personally am not a big fan of "creative spellings". I'm a teacher so getting to know students year after year with confusing spellings may have something to do with it. Plus I have a hang up of feeling as though it's not really proper. But since you have a reasoning as to why you would want it spelled that way I say go for it. I did think of it in my head though as Add-in.

  • when I just looked at it I pronounced it Aid-en. So I think your all set =)
  • Due to the popularity of Aiden, I was unaware that Adin is an authentic and proper spelling of this name. I'm worried that people would think it is a misspelled version of Aiden. Although it is an authentic spelling of the name, I would still probably spell it Aiden if you want to avoid mispronounciation and confusion. Good luck!

That's how I read it, too.

I am omitting a letter from DD2's name so it will be pronounced how I want and it has already been 'brought to my attention' that I am spelling it wrong. Uh, no, it's my kid and I will spell her name as I please. I don't think your name is outlandish at all.
