**petdoc** and cat owners

I could use some advice.

DH and I took in a stray (boy) cat in December and had him neutered. He has since fallen in love with one of our girl cats. About two months ago he bit her in the butt (to show his affection) and the bite got infected.

Just got back from the vet this morning and she has another bite/infection. This is by her ear, on her head.

DH and I don't know what to do. He is over it and wants to think about finding a new home. I'm not ready to give up. We bought him a collar with a bell so she can hear him coming, but I guess it's not enough.

Other than the biting we have no other issues. He is very sweet and easy going. Any ideas on how we can get him to leave her alone?  We would love to keep our family intact! Thank you for the help.

  • hmmm well the bell is a good move. My sisters cat did that to one of my girls. Bit her butt and it got infected. But then he started PEEING on my other girl. That's right. Peeing on her. We got those Feliway plug ins and also used the spray and that seemed to help calm his a$$ down. I moved out since I got married and I don;t know if that was a true solution but it worked for the time being.

OP, I would suggest not trying to domesticate a stray.  Let him come and go as he pleases, he could just be upset at suddenly being caged, so to speak.  I have two feral cats, both male.  I kept them inside until they were neutered and now they hang out in the yard and adjoining yards during the day, usually finding cool places to sleep.  They meet me at the front door when I get home from work to eat dinner, they go out again to hunt and play and come back in when I go to sleep for the night.  They eat their "breakfast" during the night and go back out for the day around 6am.  One likes to snuggle in the morning so he waits until the very last minute to go back out, but I think this is because he isn't allowed to sleep with me anymore since finding out I was pregnant.

That particular one likes to fight with the neighborhood cats and comes home with cuts and bites.  I have been bathing him since he was just a few weeks old so he knows the drill and puts up with it.  I have only had one bite get infected and had to take him in for antibiotics, the rest heal on their own after a thorough cleaning.

ETA: I am sure you already did this, but just make sure all of your cats are up to date on vaccinations and received the FeLV already.

  • When we got our second cat she was about half the size of our other cat and he HATED her. We got feliway plugins and I'm sure that's the only thing that stopped him from killing her. He calmed down almost immediately and even though it took him awhile to like her and not be annoyed with her, he stopped hurting her.

Thank you so much for responding. I am desperate!

They are both healthy. Our girl is about 13 yo and the boy is 1 or 2 yo (vet's best estimate).

When we brought him home we initially did not separate him. He's actually quite lazy and kept to himself while he was healing.

We think the bites are happening at night. We've never seen him go after her, but he will definitely stalk her and follow her around the house. (It doesn't help that she will not stand up to him) He shows no other aggression toward the other cats.

The cats usually get along quite well. We have 3 girls and 2 boys. The boys are good buddies. None of the girls really like him yet. I think they're intimidated because he is male and the biggest cat.

I've asked multiple docs in the practice and they had no other suggestions. I forgot to mention we are also using a spray bottle with water when he stalks her.  I definitely can try to step up his play so he is too tired to follow her. We're really at a loss.

  • Are they eating out of the same food bowl? My one cat was on a farm as a kitten and they would basically throw food out to the cats and it was a feast or famine type situation.  We had them eating out of of separate bowls but in the same room and the farm cat would get aggressive and growl if the other cat came near him.  We now have their bowls in separate rooms and its stopped for the most part.

Maybe the cat wants separate food, litter etc ???
