Re: Meal times

  • Most of the time I will put ds' food on a plate or in a bowl, but he will usually dump everything within 10 minutes. If we give him a fork or spoon he will just play with it in his food and refuses to eat. I'm not sure when ill start teaching with utensils because right now it's a huge pain and he is definitely not ready for it!

  • I was feeling like a lazy mom too, because it seems like so many others with toddlers this age are saying that utensils and plates are a regular thing at the table.

I sometimes give him a plate, sometimes a fork and spoon, sometimes all, sometimes none.  Depends on my mood and his.  I also watch carefully.  If he is really hungry he seems to eat off the plate well, but as soon as he gets a little bored he's dumping everything out.  As soon as that starts to happen, the plate goes away.  Usually, I might hand him back a dropped utensil once or twice, but that's about it.

I don't see many adults eating straight off the table with their hands, though, so I figure that he'll probably figure it out eventually. Stick out tongue

Right now, I feel like just the eating part of meal time is struggle enough and I just don't have the patience for adding on more distractions most nights.

  • No utensils or plates for DS2. Actually barely any real food for him. Im fully ashamed to say it but he still eats baby food a few times a day, and is on the bottle. We have tried every possible food. We try to give him the same things are DS1 but, he hates hates hates food. Pedi thinks he has a sensitivity to textures. Sometimes if he even touches something he doesn't want to eat, he spits out the food in his mouth that he likes. So frankly any food he eats...in any form..from any dish is a blessing!

But if we do put something that he likes like crackers or puffs or tuna in a bowl, everything goes everywhere fast.

I have tried giving LO plates and bowls but she usually dumps them, so I've given up. I put her food on the tray and ill give her a fork or spoon to use. Sometimes she uses it and sometimes she doesn't. I put the food on a spoon and give her the spoon to put into her mouth. If she's being stubborn, I feed her myself while she eats Cheerios or raisins with her hands.

  • DD has been using plates and utensils for several months. She is good with a spoon but sometimes wants me to load the fork then hand it back to her. If she is really into what she is eating then she has no time for utensils and shovels it in with her hands.

DD2 has been eating off of plates/bowels for a long time now. Since January or February I think. We definitely transitioned her to them much earlier than we did with DD1. She really wanted to eat off a plate and at the table like her sister, and meal times were miserable until I figured it out. She's been using a fork or spoon with most meals for a month or two now. She's starting to get really good at it.

  • Anytime we give a bowl or a plate it is dumped immediately so I just put the food on his tray.  I always give a spoon or fork but mostly it gets thrown off and not used.  He will refuse to eat from a spoon or fork from me and wants to feed himself.  Sometimes I can load his spoon/fork and he'll eat from it but then he gets bored and will eat with his hands.

I'm not worried about it.  They are still young.  My DD was the same and she now eats from plates/bowls with her proper utensils at the table!

  • We are using bowls and plates, but we use the Tommee Tippee explora suction plates and bowls so they stick to the highchair top. Some of the food ends up on the highchair but it's good practice. We always give them a spoon or fork. They are pretty good w/ the fork, but not so much w/ the spoon. They usually pick the food up and put it on the spoon and then eat it.
