What clothes do I need?

For those that live somewhere with four seasons and are due in Aug, what type of clothing are you getting and in what sizes?  I'm having a hard time figuring out what I'll need and how much of it to get.  I did get some hand-me-downs and know that some people will give clothing as gifts, but I want to make sure I'm looking for the right items.  Thanks!

  • I would get onesies for sure. Depending on how big you baby is will be the deciding factor on size. My kids all lived in onesies and pj's for like the first month. it was so much easier then full outfits for as much as you are going to have to change a newborn. I would buy mostly 0-3 months. My first 2 kids were both small so I still have some newborn stuff, but I wouldn't recommend stock piling on that size.

  • I live in 4 seasons country too...im buying spring cotton size 13 months only not more cz itll get cold after that
  • I'm going with the smallest onesies we hung onto with short tank sleeves but light sleepers mostly 0 to 3 through 6 to 9 months all the way through spring. Zippers are the best. I wish I could find more newborn 0 to 3 with zippers!

We have several 0 to 9 month sleep sacks that were awesome last time. I think we have a Halo sleeveless one in medium and it would be way too big for a newborn. I figure we'll be swaddling until mid to late fall. We have a Miracle Blanket which worked after the hospital blankets got too small.

  • We have about 10 onesies/outfits in newborn size and 10 in 0 to 3 months. You can always use short sleeved onesies and layer them; then are one of the few things you can really buy in advance.

Instead of trying to guess the size for the season, I would just start putting money aside and purchasing later.

For my first, everyone kept trying to guess what size he would be in what season. We had a ton of clothes that he never wore, and most we couldn't return. It was a waste.

ie. DS was 19.5 in, 6lbs3oz at birth. He wore newborn clothes for three months. DD was 19in long, 6lbs7oz at birth and wore newborn clothes for less then a month.

As wonderful as it is to have a stash, I recommend waiting to buy.

  • So I also live in a place with 4 seasons and have had 3 previous late fall and winter babies. I am not sure how accurate this is but I was told when it is warm you dress the baby in what you would wear and when it is colder you add a layer. This speaking for newborns specifically.
