I had my first prenatal appointment today and it went SO well. It started off with a pap, and who doesn't love a good pap smear??? Right?? No? Me neither. lol
But THEN I got to hear the heartbeat! Best ever! Little nuggets heart is beating at about 175 which my doc says is really good. I'm at 10 weeks and they confirmed my due date is 12/3. I was sooo nervous because I was told I had a SCH a month ago, but he said everything looks perfect. Woo HOO!!!
After he was all done with the exam, he pulled up his stool and started talking about food choices, water intake, the usual. Then he said something about not liking sugar substitutes, even sucralose, which I thought was ok.
So after he leaves and I'm finally allowed to put my pants on, I think, well Wtf am I going to do without splenda?! lol. I drink tea, hot and cold, like no ones business. I know I can use honey, but I associate that with sore throats. Has anyone ever used agave syrups or something else to sweeten their beverages?
I love that this is what's sticking out to me as important from my appointment. haha

i was a splenda fiend prior to finding out i was pregnant. i used it in coffee & tea several times a day and didn't think i could ever give it up. i immediately switched to sugar in the raw after my BFP. it took me awhile to get used to it, but now 1 packet of real, unprocessed sugar makes my coffee the right amount of sweet (not overly sweet, like it was with splenda). i actually had some splenda the other day because it was the only thing available, and it tasted absolutely awful, like chemicals. glad i gave it up and will not be going back after the baby is here.
point is, try an alternative for awhile and see if you can deal with it. you might surprise yourself.

honestly, pregnant or not, artificial sweeteners aren't good for you. any sort of processed stuff. stevia is better, but tastes like crap. there's a few other natural sweeteners.
i just went cold turkey with sugar. it sucks for a few weeks, but then you don't even notice. i allow myself some sugar every now and then, but it's been so much better without it.
a tsp of sugar is 16 calories.
I use regular sugar.
Sugar in the raw is fantastic!! I've never tried Agave but have heard it is great. I'm one of those crazy food purists so I despise the existence of Artificial anything haha!
totally understand about being calorie conscious. i'm with you on that, and it's one if the reasons i was hesitant to part with splenda. but it's worth it in the long run!
All of this. Agave isn't much better, because the kind you usually find in the store is more processed than HFCS. Honey and maple syrup are basically the most natural sweetners you can get, and some think that coconut sugar is a good choice as well.
