Gunky eye

So I think DD has a blocked tear duct in her right eye. I noticed a little crustiness yesterday and figured it was nothing but she has it again today with a lot of whiteyellow discharge. Her eye isn't red at all so I'm pretty sure it isn't pinkeye.
Has anyone tried the breast milk trick I keep reading about? Should I try that for a day or two before calling the pedi or call right away? The gunk isn't bothering DD it really only bothers me to look at.

I wasn't able to try breast milk because my milk never came in.  I rubbed the tear duct area and then used warm water multiple times a day to clean the area gently.  I found the less I messed with it the better it was.  Went away after 2 days in our case.

  • LO's eyes were terrible that first week after he was born. We kept wiping them with warm water. The dr gave us some drops that cleared it up really quickly. We did not try breastmilk for it but we did use it to clear LO's nose and it seems to help.

  • My LO one has had this for weeks and we have ointment for it but our doctor said we only need to use it if the eye is swollen and red on top of the eye goop or if you needing to wipe the eye clean 3 times or more in an hour....can last up to a year unfortunately :

  • I tried breast milk and made it much worse for DD#2 - because it turned out she has MSPI and at the time, I didn't know and I was not dairy free.  After putting the breast milk in her eye, I then had red eyes to deal with.  If they don't have MSPI, I have heard it works.

  • Keep using a warm washcloth to massage the tear duct and wipe away the gunk. I though DD had this when she was first born but because the gunk came back so frequently we went in to the Pedi. Turns out it was pink eye, even though her eyes weren't all red (but when he pulled down her bottom lid it was bright red!). I guess my advice is keep cleaning it and if it doesn't go away within a few days, check in with your pediatrician.

  • yup, we lightly massaged a little breast milk in his ducts and that worked wonders.  :_

  • My sons right eye has been like that since day one, tried breastmilk...didn't work. So I just put a warm rag on it and wipe both eyes in the morning and at night... it helps a lot. My pedi didn't seem too concerned about it.
