Natural Birth

SPD and natural birth?

I've been experiencing symptoms of what I believe to be SPD (it's definitely not round ligament pain because it's centralized to the left side of my pubic bone) and am a FTM wanting a natural birth... although I have yet to talk to my OB about this, I'm reading that in some cases C-sections are required to prevent permanent or further separation of the pubic joint that's causing me problems.

I'm 17 weeks and although I really wanted natural, but of course giving birth to a healthy baby is my frist priority over the method/whatever ends up happening. I'm sad about the possibility of C-section if it comes to that, and the difficulty of just moving is getting me depressed as I looked forward to a healthy/active pregnancy.

Has anyone gone natural all the way with this condition? Anyone generally dealt with SPD regardless?

Re: SPD and natural birth?

  • C-section is only in really extreme cases; a bit of pelvic pain is pretty normal. I've got some right front and center where the ligaments are. It's been around since around 18 weeks, but hasn't really gotten any worse. It comes and goes and I don't anticipate it having an impact on the birth.

This has some exercises that won't hurt anything to start:

I've used those to modify my yoga a bit - full spinal balance was painful, but just lifting the arm/leg slightly is not.

  • I was pretty uncomfortable with pubic bone pains during second trimester - especially after doing certain stretches is yoga (mainly "hip openers" and squats.) I quit doing those - and started doing a very similar maneuver as PP describes whenever I felt it. I haven't had any pain in the last 2 months. Still cautious to do wide squats, but I can definitely do some...it got way better.

  • Well, seemingly overnight I'm having intense pain in the groin/pubic bone while walking (I have to limp as I transfer weight from one leg to the other), changing pants/putting on shoes, getting in/out of the car. Even when sitting there is a deep, dull ache on the left side of my pubic bone.

I guess I forgot to mention that I'm also a yoga teacher (when not working at the office), and I'm worried about how this will affect my ability to teach let alone practicing myself since anything remotely hip-opening is agony.

I will try that chiro move at home, and will be talking to my OB tomorrow. I've heard PT and chiro have done wonders for some so I hope it will for me too, because I don't want to suffer through this for another 20+ weeks!

  • It's painful in pregnancy, but it did not impact either of my two births. I would not worry at all.  I see a chiropractor. I didn't notice any pain in labor, at all. And the pain was greatly reduced immediately upon not being pregnant, and fully went away within days.
  • Mine is on and off as well, it seems to be extremely common and when I mentioned it to my MW she did not seem to be concerned about my ability to deliver naturally even though it gets really severe at times.
  • I have had extreme cases with both pregnancies and the rare misfortune of it not ending post-partum. Vaginal, unmedicated delivery is optimal because then you stay aware of your body's limitations, are not restricted to bed, etc. Water birth is a great option.

I paid OOP for a CPM birth with DS2 for many reasons, but a major one was because the OB medical system had no clue how to deal with me when I had DS1. I suffered so needlessly. Chiro care could've helped things right away, but my OB told me there was nothing to do but suffer even though I had the worst case he'd ever seen. Ridiculous!

I went to a chiro who specializes in PG regularly through my PG with DS2 and though nothing could stop the separation, I didn't have to stay in constant pain. I could get a few days of relief here and there.

For DS2's birth, I had a lovely natural birth where I was in the water until 3 pushes before DS2 was born (I had to get out for an unrelated reason) and a quick recovery. Though I still have chronic pelvic instability, it is nothing like how it was when my OB let me go untreated.
