Ear infections....

So Parker has his first ear infection :( this is probably the root cause of his horrible sleeping habits lately.  Went to the doctor on Friday, got an antibiotic and Motrin and his sleep got WORSE!!! We are now up every hour as opposed to every two hours!

That was the last two nights.... I am seriously hoping that after five doses of his medicine he is getting some relief. I thought his sleep would have gotten a little better, not the other way around.

I switched him to Tylenol instead of Motrin, I'm wondering if maybe hat was bothering him or keeping him up, instead of helping him? I dunno, I'm totally at a loss!

if your lo has had an ear infection, what was it like for you??

Re: Ear infections....

  • Poor Parker! (And poor sleepless mama!) I thankfully haven't been in this boat yet, but I am sending hugs your way. Just a thought, but could the antibiotic be upsetting his stomach, and that's why he's not sleeping? I hope he feels better soon and that you all get some rest.

i guess it's a possibility, I mean anything is possible!  He does get the medicine with food, at. Breakfast and at dinner, and it is a few hours before bedtime....but who. Knows!

I'm not gonna lie, this sucks so bad!

Does her belly bother her during the day and the night? Parker seems to only be bothered at night....I think I'm gonna have to call the doctor again tomorrow.

Everything that bugs P seems to be way worse at night. But her medicine gives her diarrhea after a few days and the yogurt helps ease it.

Im calling again today as well, now if someone touches her ears she cries! Poor babes.

  • My DS has had a bunch of ear infections and currently has one now.

It took awhile to find an antibiotic that didn't upset his stomach and give him horrible diarrhea.

My DS has been on the antibiotic for 5 days and last night he still woke up a bunch of times. He wanted to sleep up on my shoulder. It hurts their ears to lay flat when they have an ear infection.

ETA and I give him Tylenol if he seems to be in a lot of pain. It seems to help.

  • Lying down is the most painful position with ear infections.  If you can prop him up, that might help until the antibiotic really kicks in.  My pedi has always told us that it can take up to 5 days to see improvement, but generally it's 3-4 days for us.  DS had numerous ear infections his first year, and DD has had two so far.  DD's first ear infection turned out to be resistant to amoxicillin; she was was still miserable and not sleeping after 8-9 days of medicine.  Hope your little guy is better soon.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Thanks everyone!  I do have his bed propped up! And we actually got some sleep last night, so hopefully we are on our way out of this thing!

  • How do you recognize an ear infection? Pulling on ears, yucky stuff coming out of ears, something else? Ear infections seem to be so common, but neither of my kids has ever had one. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I've been too laid back and ignored the signs. DS has had lots of colds/congestion and coughs this year, but I haven't noticed him ever pulling on his ears except when he's tired. Just wondering.

With my DS, the biggest sign is he won't sleep laying in the crib. Yet he will sleep on my shoulder no problem.

Other things that have happened are him throwing up, not wanting to drink his bottle, and him running a fever.

Honestly he's had so many ear infections that whenever he seems 'off' I tend to think it's his ears right away.

  • Poor guy! We have had our share of ear infections and the first one with amoxicillin the nights seemed to be a nightmare too! We used Tylenol as needed but will say the next time we had it and then again with another antibiotic it got easier. Sucks but hopefully all continues to get better!
