Twins?

Hi everyone! I'm new to the birth club. Due 1212 : I have a question because everyone is asking when they see me. This is my first child, and my stomach is normally flat. I am only 8 weeks and 4 days as of today, and my belly is literally looking as though I'm 4 months along. There is no denying it : I had to switch to maternity clothing at 5 weeks. I know it's all bloating, but since it's such an immense amount of bloating could that mean twins? That would be a miracle! We have none in our family, but we would welcome them with open arms! My husband and I are so excited no matter what 3 what do you guys think? I'm 27, and hubby is in the military and he will be away the next few weeks so we have to wait till I'm 12 weeks to get our first ultrasound may 30th. I'm a local photographer and staying busy with that, and all my clients are in shock! They can't believe I'm only almost 9 weeks! : thanks in advance for any thoughts :

Re: Twins?

  • you could very well be..but only a ultrasound can confirm that, when is your first ultrasound?  I found out at 6 weeks that I am having twins, and i'm now 8 weeks and 4 days and look like i'm 3-4 months already!  let us know when you find out

  • Aw thank you for replying! I'm so glad I joined this page. I won't have our first ultrasound until 12 weeks, I wish it was earlier but since hubby will be gone I just can't bring myself to go without him. So may 30th will be our first. So I'm not crazy for thinking it might be twins? Lol! It's just so shocking how fast my belly grew, on top of that I am 5'10" so I figure it would be even bigger on someone shorter. Thank you so much again for your reply! And congrats to you times two!!! So happy for you!
  • I agree with pp. You could be, but you won't know for sure until you have an ultrasound, or if a doppler picks up two hb's. Bloating can also get out of control depending on your body type and diet.

    Welcome and good luck!

It is probably just bloat. Extreme bloat is normal at this stage. It will go down. Your baby is literally the size of a raspberry it wouldn't be big enough to cause your uterus to expand and cause a true bump. I'm sure if you are normally very petite it is just more noticeable.

ETA: I forgot to add welcome to the board!

  • The amount of bloat really isn't an indicator of twins. I've known friends of mine who are bloated like that and it was only a singleton. As pp said only an ultrasound would tell. Welcome and good luck!

  • LOL I can relate but for different reasons. My abdominal wall was separated so far during my second pregnancy that it never came back together and sits apart by about 4 inches. I'm only 5'3 and 120lbs. Needless to say I'm 8weeks 2days and look at least 5months hahahaha

  • Only an u/s will tell you for sure.  I found at 6 1/2 weeks that I'm having twins.  I am doing maternity shopping now because the rubber band in the buttonhole is just not working anymore.  So, I guess I am 8 weeks and officially in maternity.  It could just be bloat....unfortunately you will just have to wait and see.

This. I can't say you're NOT having twins, but nothing you've described indicates twins. An ultrasound is the only way to tell. If you didn't use fertility treatments, don't have twins in your family, and have no other risk factors for twins, I wouldn't expect twins. I also wouldn't expect more than one based on the nformation you've provided alone

  • Thanks so much for all the advice! I was mostly wondering of anyone else was bloated this much. I am aware we won't know till the ultrasound, but since hubby is gone for so long, we are waiting till he gets back to go together. Looking forward to finding out. Thanks again for everything!
  • You may be having twins.  Can't tell until the ultrasound.  Remember though, identical twins isn't based on family history or anything, it's just a random splitting of the egg.  It could happen to anyone.  Are your other symptoms more intense than usual pregnancies?  I hear twins pregnancies cause more symptoms becuase of higher level of hormones.  You can guess all day and all night, but won't know until the U/S.
