Dentist??

It occurred to me that we may have to be scheduling our first dentist appointments soon... Can anyone educate me on when this needs to be?  I seem to remember something about 1 year after the 1st tooth appears.  Can anyone confirm or correct?

Re: Dentist??

  • My dentist told me they really don't need it until 2 or 3, but there's this commercial that keeps coming on tv that says "have one by one", that's making me second guess them.

  • Our pediatrician said it was time to make a dentist appointment at our 12 month appointment. I just got around to making their appointment. It'll be next month.

  • I think it depends on the dentist. I took my younger son right when he turned 1 but only because I was already taking my older son for his first checkup. My older son was about 33 months and I had never taken him. With my younger son, they said the only reason to bring them in at 1 is to discuss proper care at this age like wiping teeth and gums, no bottles in bed, no sugary foods, etc. it was more of a visit to instruct me and get into good habits rather than to look at his teeth. He did look at his teeth but didn't do anything. No cleaning, no fluoride, nothing. I kind of got the impression that I don't need to bring him back until he is closer to 3. With my older son they looked at his teeth and applied fluoride but won't do an actual cleaning until 3, when he can better handle it. He was great at the dentist, but this is just their standard policy. FWIW, we do go to a pediatric dentist. I would call your dentist or the dentist you plan to go to and ask what they recommend but I wouldn't worry that you haven't been there yet.

  • I just took my son for his first appointment this week. I use a pediatric dentist. She said that they need to be seen for the first time around a year old. They brushed his teeth and done a fluoride treatment. The dentist looked into his mouth and made sure that she didn't see "anything of concern". He will now go every six months (just like an adult) for check ups. I am not sure at what age they will actually begin to "clean" his teeth. If nothing else, I feel like it is great experience for them just so that they can get used to the place, dentist, exam, ect before their first actual cleaning.

  • I won't take him until he's at least 2.5.
