Camping...would you?

Friends of ours mentioned today about wanting to go camping. At the point this would take place I would be just over 6 months along. And it's not the RV type camping...this is the tent and air mattress type camping. My concerns are the air mattress, the bugs, and the cold (my joints tend to stiffen up when its cold and damp). The air mattress because of my back and hips - if the mattress leaks air at all and I end up on the ground I think that might be bad.

I could just say no but I want to know if there's things I'm not considering? Would you ladies do it? I used to love camping but I'm not so sure I'd love it at 6 months pregnant. I already feel like I look like i'm 6-7 months along and I've only just hit 5. Opinions and advice appreciated.

  • We have 3 trips planned for this summer :) I'll be 7 1/2 months for the last one. I will have my own airmattress so I can make it as firm as I want. I camped durring my first pregnancy and had a wonderful time. It will be the last time we got for a few years so we are taking advantage of it!

  • I would go ! I'm going in July the only thing I worry about is getting up to pee again and again . Be sure to bring a body pillow or extra pillows .

  • Heck yes I would. That's one of the things on my to do list before little one gets here. Boyfriend got me a tent for my birthday too, so no better time to use it then now!

We definitely plan on camping this summer (tent camping).  My friend went camping a lot - her baby was born early July and she was still camping in June.
Hoping this one stays put a little longer

  • I'm planning at least one car camping trip and one short backpacking trip.  Bugs are less of an issue here than they are elsewhere, though.

Will you be far from home?  You could always plan ahead so that you can go home if you are miserable (come back in the am to pack up), or come during the day and campfire, then head home for sleep.

  • I was actually the most comfortable ever during a pregnancy when we went camping and I slept on one I those super thick air mattresses. It was so comfortable!

  • I have two camping trips planned for this summer. One in late June and the other in late July. The only thing I'm worried about is night time peeing only because I'm afriad I will run into a bear.

  • Absolutely, we have a bunch of camping trips planned up until 2 weeks before I deliver. I went a lot when I was pregnant with my first and it was great. If you are already thinking you are going to be miserable or a drag, listen to your gut and stay home though.

  • I'm planning on camping as well around that time! I'm just gonna make sure to bring extra blankets and pillows and hope for the best! I'm not going for a week though maybe just a weekend, 2 nights MAX., the nature walks are great exercise too! :
  • Another camper here. We're planning to go two weekends a month all summer, just in case our little boy doesn't care for it by next summer. My girls (ages 4 and 3) love camping and I'm hoping this little one does, too.

The peeing is definitely the only thing I'm worried about.

  • I plan on doing some tent camping this summer.  I did when I was pregnant with M in the summer and fall (5mo).  I did fine on a mat and I'm not in my 20's.  I would think with an air mattress you won't have any problems.  I figure waking up a little sore is not the end of the world.   I did bring my body pillow.  I find that to be vital.  Just make sure you bring enough water.

  • This is extremely helpful ladies!

We would only be 45 minutes from home so the distance isn't an issue. I honestly used to LOVE camping and we haven't gone in a while so it would be nice. It would only be for 1 or 2 nights so it wouldn't be bad. The peeing at this stage is a non-issue so far but might be at 6-7 months. I don't wake up to pee, even as big as this kiddo already is. I've been really fortunate. It happened a bit when I was first pregnant (between 5-8 weeks!) and hasn't really happened since. I'm a solid sleeper though. I was more worried about being uncomfortable and sore. Which could be remedied by a ton of pillows and super thick air mattress. We also have a heater for the tent so we SHOULD be ok. I don't want to stop doing fun things just because I'm pregnant. And you all are right - we probably won't get this chance again for quite some time. I might just do it! :)

  • My SILs are going camping at the end of July. They asked if I wanted to go out of kindness so I didnt feel left out but in all honesty I wouldnt have cared if they didnt tell me at all! I am far from the out doorsy type and I will be pretty big considering I could have the twins any time in August. My doctor also said he doesnt want me traveling more than 1.5 hours away from him from mid June until delivery.

If you think you can tolerate it (heat, bugs, air mattress, nature...) then go for it but I be prepared for the possibility of being very uncomfortable.

  • In a heartbeat.  I've been trying to get hubby to plan a camping trip for ages...
