Food Allergy

epi-injection question

Hi!  I'm new to this board & new to the whole food allergy thing.  My 19month old son broke out in hives after a smear of peanut butter touched his skin- prior to that he only had a few bites of peanut butter & would get red spots around his mouth.  So I took him to his ped. & got a prescription for an epi pen.  Pick it up at the pharmacy, read the instructions, open the box, then suddenly notice that the box says 'for patients over 66lbs'.  Clearly this not the correct dosage for a toddler.  My question is, I'm leaving for Mexico tomorrow & will not have time to exchange it.  Should I bother taking the dumb thing in case my son should have some kind of reaction?  I'd like to think it unlikely since I watch what he eats pretty closely, but his cousins will be there eating pb&j sandwiches, so who knows if there could be some mishap.  He hasn't really eaten a full helping of anything with peanuts, so I don't know what would happen.  But if it got life threatening, I don't know if I should even use it. I wouldn't want to cause harm by injecting him with an adult dose of epinephrine, but I also wouldn't want him to die.  Thoughts?  Also, would the pharmacy exchange an open epi box for the correct dosage?  This thing is sooooo expensive!

I would go back to the pharmacy and get it exchanged for an Epi-Pen Jr, that's what you need. I would not want to be without one. You really should have two, actually, they're supposed to be kept in pairs in case one fails. Also, make sure you wipe down everything when you get on the plane, since they often serve peanuts. You can let the flight attendants know that he's severely allergic and ask them not to serve peanuts, or at least not in the few rows around you. I'd also have children's benadryl on hand.

  • My dd who is almost 8 now, did an in office challenge at age 2, weighing 25 lbs. she failed th challenge right away, and doc used an adult Epi. She was fine. I would take 2 Epis with on the trip, and when you get back, then look not changing them to Jrs.
