Earache ?

Are there signs that they have an earache? Last time I posted about DD being sick many of you suggested she may have an earache and that when your baby had one they were still happy and smiley and not really fussy. She has a bad cold yet again thank you daycare and I'm worried it will turn in to an ear infection. Last time she had fluid behind her ears a little and the doc thought she was possibly at the end of one. She doesn't have a fever so what are the signs if any?

Re: Earache ?

  • Both of my boys would get very fussy when I laid them down. The pedi told me its from the pressure, it gets worse when laid flat. Also DS1 would pull on his ears.

  • Pulling at their ears, not wanting to eat, crying after laying down for a while, etc. They don't have to have all the symptoms though.

  • My daughter would wake very hour and was extra clingy. She was just not herself. I believe she had a fever as well.

  • Pulling on ears, screaming when you lay them flat, irritability...dd has had an ongoing ear infection for over a month. She just finished her 3rd round of antibiotics but I'm not entirely sure her ear infection has gone away. Regardless she'll be referred to an ent the next time i take her for a potential ear infection. :(

  • If she is tugging at her ears and you think she has one, then I would suggest getting it checked. Not to scare you, but I thought my son had one cuz he was pulling his ear and coughing but no fever and acting normal and the doctor said no ear infection. A couple weeks later the cough got worse and cold symptoms came. It turns out he had developed a respitory infection from drainage getting into his lungs and we had to put him on antibiotics for the ear infection and breathing treatments for the respitory. Moral of the story...trust your instincts. Good luck.

  • Well, I took her to the pedi walk in clinic this morning and no ear infection.  It was the same exact situation as 3 weeks ago - she has a bad cold and some fluid behind her one ear.  The post nasal drip is causing her to cough.  I feel so bad for her.  She's literally been sick since starting DC on April 1 with the exception of about 3 days.  It's heartbreaking to see her so sick for so long.  She's teething immensely on top of it - not one tooth yet.  Man the first year is brutal!

  • Sometimes DS would pull on his ears. Or he would cry more when I put him in the crib than when he was upright. He usually had a fever though.
