Minnesota Babies

United vs. Abbott

Hi, I'm 29 weeks and the OB I'm seeing only delivers at United. I absolutely LOVE her and really don't want to change doctors but, I have heard way better things about the new Mother Baby Center at Abbott. Should I just stick with United or am I better off going to Abbott to deliver? If I decide to go to Abbott do I have to switch OB's or can I keep seeing mine and just register at Abbott?

Thanks!

I didn't deliver at either, but have heard good things about both.  Also nice that both are connected to Children's Hospital, if by some chance there is some issue with the baby, you have the NICU right there. United is in a better neighborhood than Abbott.

My doctor is from the Allina network and I love her. I was told by Allina personel that they only deliver at United. So that would make me think if you choose Abbott you wouldn't be able to keep your doctor. Not positive though. If it helps, I have heard great things about United's staff especially and with having specialists on the same floor and down the hall I know for me I feel much more confident that things will be okay with my first child.
  • I've had both my daughters at United. I loved my OB, sadly he left the clinic I was going to and I have been unable to find him. So my son will be delivered at North Memorial. I have seen something online with a list of all the hospitals and their csection rate. According to that United has one of the highest rates for csections. I ended up with 2 so that is something to consider too. at least in my opinon I had run ins with horrible nurses and felt that I didn't get checked on after my csections. i seriously saw the nurse when admitted and had to call multiple times for pain meds. Then it took an hour plus to get them.
But that's my experience. It looks as though some of the other girls had good experiences.

Im pretty sure your dr can't just go deliver a baby at Abbott if she's not networked with them.

Also, even if you deliver where your doctor delivers, your doctor may not be working those hours. My dr was on call the night my water broke, but i didn't deliver ds til the next night so I didn't even see my dr during labor, delivery or in the hospital. Another dr from the practice delivered my baby.

My sister delivered her second baby at United and said that the nurses and doctors there were fantastic. She had a really good experience.

I am delivering at United and the research I did lead me to believe you would most likely need to find a different Dr. If you wanted to deliver at Abbott. But don't forget that you might not get your dr at time of delivery anyway.
