Need STM help...

Yesterday, my DH's family made the suggestion of starting to purchase diapers. I hadn't really thought about it, but upon hearing this, I decided it was a good idea. The only problem is, I'm a FTM so I don't know how much of which size of what brand to buy.

Ive read from other posts, to use Pampers swaddlers in the beginning, which is cool. But how much should I buy? The whole diapering concept if quite new for me. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also, I'm sorry if this is a repeat post :(

Re: Need STM help...

  • I had a small baby (under 6 pounds), so we did Newborn diapers for a couple of weeks.  But I imagine most moms don't and go straight to size 1.

I'd get 400 size 1s (at an average of 6/day, that's just over 2 month's supply - giving you enough time to know if you like them and not being catastrophic if you don't)

Get a package or two of the small Newborns packs if you want, just in case.  If you don't use them, they make great gifts for other new moms.

I used luvs. My son peed out of Huggies and Pampers almost every time. Also, He was over 8lbs when he was born so we only used maybe one pack of NB diapers.

My daughter was rather large so we used newborn diapers for about two weeks just to get rid of our stash and then went straight to size one. At first your baby will go through about 10-12 diapers a day. I'd slowly buy size one diapers as you see them go on sale. That is one of the easiest things to buy later though so don't freak out and break the bank :P

  • We used pampers swaddlers and they worked great. She was in newborns for a couple of weeks, we maybe went through two boxes. She was in ones for a while, so we went through a lot of those. My cousin has a 7 week old boy who is HUGE. He skipped newborns and was in ones for a couple of weeks and is now already in twos. We think it's funny because my almost two year old is still in threes. But remember BRU will exchange them if you buy too many of one size.

  • You will probably fly through newborns. Don't get a bunch of those. Size ones will last a little longer but you will go through all sizes quickly until 3s where you will hang out.
I bought all different kinds of diapers and have liked a few of them. Get different brands smaller packs until you decide what you like.
  • I wouldn't pre-buy a ton of diapers. Like others have said, you don't know what size/brand will work for you and diapers are a super easy thing to get as they are available almost everywhere. It isn't like you need to prepare for some shortage, unless your family knows something we don't

  • I would never recommend this - you just have no idea how fast baby's going to move through sizes and what brand will work best. DD was born full term and totally healthy at 4lb10oz (yeah, that was a shock...I had preemie nothing) and was in preemie for a month, and then size newborn for another month or two after that. We didn't get to size 1 until she was about 3mos old. With sales and BRU bonus giftcards I typically pay about $25 for the largest box of diapers (that's about $10 off a box). At first, DD used 10 a day...we didn't use night diapers until she was about 10mos old and consistently sleeping through the night.

Babies R Us used to offer a program for diapers and forumla. You get a special card and preload it with $$. They then add 10% of whatever you put on. This card can only be used for diapers and formula, but it's another way to save - if they still offer it. Just put money aside and expect the expense, but I wouldnt stock up.

  • As a STM I think it's a bad idea to buy a stock of diapers before baby comes. I had I thought I would use only pampers for my DD, but she got chemical burns from the pampers diapers so we had to use a different brand. As PP have said, you don't know which diapers are going to fit your LO best. If you get them as gifts, then by all means stock up, but I wouldn't waste your money.

  • I would not buy too many ahead of time of one brand either. My daughter had reactions to quite a few different brands of diapers. It took trial and error to find a brand that didn't bother her. I wound up using 7th generation, but that is not the brand I used in the beginning.

We did pre-buy Pampers Swaddlers and they were great.  Used NBs for a few weeks, but mainly 1s.  We would just buy a pack everytime we went to the store and I taped the receipt to the pack, just in case they didn't work out.

Thanks for the help ladies. I am definitely going to look into that BRU diaper/formula card:

  • I agree about not prebuying but setting the money aside instead. However, i would recommend another option. Cloth. It's far cheaper in the long run and much more environmentally friendly. ::mobilewinky::
  • Don't buy any. I got a ton at my shower and the hospital loaded us up. We never had to buy newborns because we had plenty of free ones, all Pampers Swaddlers. We switched to cloth at 6 months but DS still fits a size 3 Swaddler at 14 months. We keep them around for church nursery, grandparents, etc. some babies are allergic to certain diapers or have an issue with fit. Stocking up will save you nothing and only take up a lot of closet space. You could always save the cash to the side for the diapers and buy later as you go.

    I disagree with their idea.nbsp;1 You don't know what shape your baby will be. My skinny DS leaked out of Huggies as a NB, then leaked out of Pampers when he reached size 3. 2 You don't know if your baby will have sensitive skin, and what brands might make their skin react. 3 You don't know how your baby will grow, and how long they will be in each size. EVERYONE on The Bump said to go straight to Size 1 diapers. DS was born fullterm, but under 6 pounds, and was in NB size diapers for 2 months. Instead, set some money aside maybe 10? each week. Maybe store it on a gift card. Then you have a diaper fund for after the baby is born, and you just need to either order from Diapers.com they do nextday delivery or run to the store or send your H when you need diapers.nbsp;

    This.

My DS was 7lb11oz and we used NB size diapers for a bit. I liked Luvs the best. DS leaked out of one but I can't remember if it was Pampers or Huggies.

This! Couldn't agree more. The gift card idea is genius, going to use that one myself.
  • RHB has great advice. I wouldn't buy more than a few packages in advance. You have no idea which diapers your baby will tolerate/like.
  • Honestly, we just bought two packs of newborns about a week before DS was born. I think we'll probably do that again with this LO. And we used Huggies to start, switched to Pampers, and switched back to Huggies. I think they're much better.

  • Meh, it sounds good in theory but doesn't always work.

Weight, height, skin sensitivities and other factors can play into what diapers will work for baby.

Just realize in October diapers and wiped will be a part of your budget.

If you have a shower and people sting diapers that is a great time to figure out which type you like because most likely people will bring you all sorts of brands.

  • The BRU diaper card is called the VIB program. Like another poster said, they add 10 of whatever you put in the card up to a certain amount. I received mine within a few days of sigh inning up and plan on collecting money to put on there every week so I'm set when baby comes
