Babies: 9 - 12 Months

DS still isn't sleeping through the night!!

He's 11 months old.. Turning 1 May 27th and still hasn't slept through the night. He's up about every 4-5 hours. Should I be concerned? Do I need to bring it up to his pediatrician?

Not unusual. When he's ready, he will. It's an inconvenience to us, not to them. Unles he was up every hour or something for no apparent reason I wouldn't mention it.

DS has good nights where he's up once or twice, and bad nights where he's up 5 times. I just take it as it comes.

  • The Pedi will likely just tell you to let LO CIO.

    This.

I asked my pedi because my 10 month old wasn't STTN and wasn't sure what we should do at a year when I start weaning. She told me to wean the night feedings. I started offering her water if she woke up. For about 3 days she would wake up get water, go back to bed. After that she didn't wake up because she didn't need the nursing session it was comfort. Now if she wakes we let her CIO before offering the water. It works good for us.

  • I was just lurking, but bought I would jump in.... My daughter didn't sleep through the night until 18mo plus. And even at almost 2, is sometimes up once or twice. Not to eat; just because she wakes up. It sucks, but is pretty normal. ;)

  • Me too. DS is a little more than 10 months. Most nights he is up every 3 hours or so. I am resigned to wait it out. You could talk to your pediatrician about it (I'm surprised they don't ask about how sleeping is going) to rule out medical issues or talk about if he still needs to eat at night (mine does). But if you don't think anything is actually wrong or he doesn't "need" to eat, your options are waiting it out or sleep training. Sorry, I feel your pain!

Well what does he want when he's up every 4-5 hours? If he's hungry and actually drinking/nursing a decent amount then he must need those wake ups. Of course all babies are different and those who say it's normal, have kids who didn't STTN until well over a year old but to me, I think they have the ability and can STTN when they are younger. I might get bashed for this but it's my opinion, based off the fact that my child did start STTN at 7 months old. I would probably rip my hair out if DS was the age he is now and not STTN.

All kids are different but I'm just playing the devil's advocate and saying it can be done at this age.

He usually only wants 1 bottle through the night.. I understand waking for that.. He goes down around 8-9 and usually gets up for the day anywhere between 8-9. I have learned in the past week that there are times he just wants a sip or two off a bottle and then goes right back to sleep. I'm wondering if he's possibly having night terrors.. He's never woke up just whining.. It's always at a bloody scream like someone was in the room hurting him.. And no one is in there. I'm gonna try to give him a little water so he's not wasting milk through the night. I've tried the CIO method.. Works sometimes.. He will cry for about 5-10 minutes and figure out that he's fine and no one is coming in to get him and he goes right back to sleep.. The night terror thing though is brought up because there are times that he's actually screaming his head off longer than I think he should be and it worries me. We go for shots the 23rd and I'm gonna ask about them. But thanks mommas for the advice! :)

  • How is this impacting YOU?  Both DH and I work so if DD wasn't sleeping through most nights we would be in a world of hurt.  Once our pedi gave us the go ahead, we started sleep training.  It only took a few nights.  When she does wake at night it is typically when she is sick so I tend to her needs and then she'll go back down.

Sleep is important for ALL of us, and I'm a better mom when I'm healthy, which largely depends on getting adequate sleep.

  • The actual medical definition of sleeping through the night for a baby is five hours.  It just isn't most people's definition.  I know that isn't a whole lot of help, but some kids just don't do it until a bit later.

With CIO to work really well, you have to be super consistent. It is really hard to do, but we sleep trained DD at 7 months and now she sleeps for 11 hours. And with CIO methods, I would recommend reading a couple books on the subject first. There are definitely different ways to do it.

  • My LO nurses exclusively but it's easier if you bottle feed.  Just cut down the time at night you are feeding them, or add water to the bottle.  I did this over a couple weeks and we went from every 2 hours to about 1-2 feedings a night (between 8:30-7:30 am.)  He has slept through the night just once, but 1-2 feedings is totally doable vs. 4-6 feedings.
