water

My in-laws were watching DD for the night while me and DH finally went out on a date. We were gone for about 8 hours. She was eating fine, but was acting hungry between feedings and MIL gave her 2 oz of water.

I kind of freaked out about it when I got home and they told me. I know it's really bad to give a baby water in the beginning because it has no nutritional value and fills their tummy up, plus is dangerous with jaundice and may cause billirubin levels to go really high.

Did I overreact? I am very concerned about feeding and allergies, so I am trying to get LO off on the right foot. DD is breast fed, with bottle supplements. She has no set feeding schedule, but usually eats on demand, about 12-15oz while I am at work. My feelings are that if she is acting hungry, then she is hungry, and she should have been given formula or pumped breastmilk.

I just don't think it's necessary to give DD water at all until we start her on solids around 6mos.

  • I would've been upset too. I've also heard that they shouldn't get water until 6 months. And like you said, if she was hungry, water wasn't going to solve that.

  • Yes, no water.  Even at 6 mo, I would still choose bm over water.  I'd just tell MIL not to do that in the future and make sure you leave enough bm for if she needs a little extra.  Depending on your MIL's age though, it was a pretty common thing to do "back in the day", so cut her a break. ;)  The grandparents have to be updated with all the new information we have.

  • I would be so upset. Yes, no water. Please update them, if you can. My in laws aren't allowed to watch LO without supervision because of incidences like this. My MIL was totally ok with LO sucking on an empty bottle because he was hungry but she didn't feel like he needed to eat. Smh! So I had to deal with an extremely fussy and gassy baby. If we ever leave him there again, she will have a list of what she can and cannot do.

  • Our doctor told us that we could give water about 2oz a day. You have to boil the water, cool it in the fridge and bring it back to room temp. In England they do this all of the time. My MIL is a nurse.
  • I would have been pissed! It would have been really hard for me not to be a total b

I think you have the right to feel a little upset. Mamas naturally have that fierce feeling of protection in them and your feelings about what your MIL did only come from that fierce feeling of love and protection for your baby.
Lots of things have changed from her generation to yours, and while of course the human race didn't die off because of their practices, its very natural to want to follow updated guidelines. I'd say let her know how you feel, but be gentle. In the end it is your baby and she should be fine with you telling her how you'd like things done.

This, water is fine when used correctly.  When DS hadn't pooped in several days doctor suggested 1-2oz a day to try and get things moving.

That being said I'd be ticked, but I'd know DS would be fine.

  • Yeah, at first I was upset because I remember hearing how DANGEROUS it was to give water. When I looked back into it, it turns out it's only really bad if the baby is less than a month because it keeps them from getting the billirubin out of their system.

She only gave her 2 oz out of the brita. DD apparently liked it. MIL was really understanding about it and everything and I don't think she'd do it again. If it was sugar water or rice cereal, then I would be really upset.
