Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Bfeeding baby only taking 4 oz from bottle??

My 4 month old sometimes only takes 4 oz or so from bottle which is a little concernig... He only eats 5 times a day (7, 10, 1, 4, and 7) so he should be taking at least 6, right??

I think the bottle might be making him super gassy too (Dr. Brown's with #1 nipple) but not sure... Any tips on how to get them to take more or make them less gassy? Gripe water?

  • DS doesn't get a bottle that often, but when he does he takes 4oz or just under.  Has your pedi voiced concerns?  If they haven't mentioned I wouldn't worry.  You could try burping half way through the bottle and see if that helps.

  • 4 oz is totally normal for a bf baby. I'd try gas drops.

  • Gas drops worked wonders for my gassy baby. And laying him tummy down across my knees and rubbing his back.

  • My 5 month old eats 4oz bottles of breastmilk every 3 hours at daycare. The rest of the day I breastfeed her directly. She eats every 3 hours during the night too. As long as your LO has enough wet diapers and is gaining weight I wouldn't worry about it

This. My 3.5 mo old takes 5 oz pretty much on the same schedule you quoted 7, 10, 1, 4, and then his bedtime bottle around 7ish.

  • A BF baby will eat between 20-30 ounces a day [they don't need as much as a FF baby usually] because the milk caters more to what they need. He's eating on the lower end of the range but if he's gaining weight and dirtying enough diapers it's probably not a problem. When in doubt call your doctor.

Are you nursing and bottle feeding because your LO is more than likely getting more from you than from the bottle. Four ounces is a totally reasonable amount for a 4 month old to drink from a bottle.

  • DD1 never ever took more than 4.5 oz, even when she was a year old. If baby is  satisfied, its fine.

"most breastfeeding (even exclusively breastfeeding) babies NEVER take more than 5oz. per feeding. Even at 6 months old. Instead of needing to go up on volumes to keep growing (and making mom's breasts have to explode) like formula-feeding babies do, a breastfeeding mom will make milk that is more nutrient-dense as her baby gets older. And, a baby whose intestines have been exposed to EGF (epidermal growth factor) in human milk will extract those nutrients more efficiently"- from the Debunked page on Facebook- its all about info on breastfeeding- VERY informational!!

My kids never drank more than 4 oz in a bottle. Are you nursing on demand?  Obviously if your a working momma you can't but when you are home with him?  Does he wake up hungry in the night?  If not, then he's obviously getting enough.

  • When do you give gas drops? Before bottle?
