when to change nipple size

Just curious as to when LO is to graduate to the next nipple size on bottles. We use Dr Brown bottles and I know we have multiple levels.  I dont get the chance to feed LO from bottle often, because if he's not nursing I am pumping.  He seems to do just fine so far but what should I be looking for to know when to switch?  TIA!!

Kellymom has an article on giving breastfed babies bottles that addresses this. According to that article it says to give the baby the highest flow they can tolerated. My LO is on level two and I am thinking of introducing level 3s.

I never move up from slow flow.

  • I hard to move up because he's collapsing all the 1 size nipples. I wasn't planning in it since I am still trying to get him on the breast but I think that's a lost cause at this point. He'll do it intermittently but he's not nursing for nourishment. Today he was on for about three minutes. Hadn't nursed since last week before that. So I moved up.

I will only move up if she starts collapsing nipples and/or getting frustrated with the flow. She's doing good for now on the slowest flow.

    This.

We just recently moved up to stage 2 (I think typically they recommend around 3mo) because DD was starting to get frustrated while eating and collapsing the nipple.  She's doing better now that we moved up.

DD seems to be a stronger sucker (I don't know what other term to use, lol) than DS was.  She sucks on her hands and fingers and has always sucked harder at things that he did.  I think we moved up to stage 2 with him when he was like 6mo and never got beyond that and he took a bottle until he was ~ 1 3/4 years.  He was fine with the stage 2.

So, we'll see what happens with DD, but I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't move up unless they seem to need it.  Seems like that would be a good idea for a mostly breastfed baby too, but that's JMO :)

This.  I know we'll have to move up at some point, but I'm letting DS call the shots on that one.  I figure your nipple size doesn't get bigger, so I'm not going to push a bigger bottle nipple size.

I'm with you on this, I see no need to move up unless he starts collapsing nipples.  I still try to nurse and he does pretty well with it at night and I think if he had a higher flow bottle he'd expect the same flow from me and that's not happening.
