XP: How often does your LO feed?

DD is 16w old, and has always been an amazing sleeper.  Currently she sleeps nearly 12h straight every night.  During the day she feed (EBF) every 2 hours and has a 45 minute nap between each feed.  This week she seems to be fighting most of those short naps then having one or two longer naps.  This sounds like a dream but I am concerned that she won't be feeding enough.

Currently she feeds 6 or 7 times a day.  She seems full and content and has been hitting her milestones ahead of schedule, so I'm not really concerned about that.  I am concerned that there have been days that she has only ate 5 times because she slept through a feed.  Some days I keep her up longer at night to get in an extra feed.

We won't be introducing solids until 6 months or so, nor will we be using formula, but I have a freezer full of BM so could add a bottle, but I don't really know when I would do that because she won't feed well if I try much sooner then 2 hours after the last feed.

DD has always been gaining weight on the slow side, and in the past month it has slowed further.

What kind of feeding schedules are your 3-4 month LOs on? Any suggestions?  Am I over thinking this?

Thanks,

J

Re: XP: How often does your LO feed?

  • My pedi said not to worry about the amount of feeds. DD only feeds 4-6 times a day. Typically 5 but if she sleeps longer I don't worry about it. She has enough dirty and wet diapers and is gaining wait so it is fine. Try not to stress about it. They eat when they need to eat.

  • My DS is 16 weeks as well. He feeds every 3  to 4 hours so about 4 times during the day. His last feeding is about 5pm, I put him to bed around 7pm and I do a dream feed around 9pm when I go to bed. If your concerned your LO isn't getting enough maybe try a dream feed so you don't have to wake your LO but you can squeeze in an extra feeding in there. I would also say if your LO isn't waking during the night she may just be a really efficient eater and is getting enough to eat during the day.

  • IMO you're overthinking.  Don't worry until you have a reason to.  It's normal for eating to vary and there are points at which growth slows so that wouldn't concern me either.  I honestly have no idea how many times per day DD eats.  She tends to eat every 2-3 hours and naps throughout the day.  She pretty much just eats when she's hungry, sleeps when she's tired.  Babies are pretty good about self-regulating and letting you know when there's a problem.  Considering she's sleeping well, hitting milestones, gaining weight, etc.  I don't think you have anything to worry about.  I wouldn't mess with her sleep to try to get her to eat either.  Just let her do her thing.

My DS eats every 3 hours around the clock.

If she's making wet diapers, gaining weight and meeting milestones, I wouldn't worry about it.
