Trying to Get Pregnant

D-chiro-inositol and PCOS?

I'm not sure if I posted this on the right board, so please advise if you have a recommendation for a better place.

I've been reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility non-stop since receiving it on Wednesday. In chapter 14 it talks about a supplement that helps lower insulin levels and "allows for a natural ovulation" (Weschler, 212). I have so many questions!

1) What the heck is D-chiro-inositol and why haven't I heard of it!?!

2) Has anyone taken it? Did it help with PCOS symptoms (anovulation, weight)?

3) Why is it so freaking expensive? Why can't I find it?

TIA!

Re: D-chiro-inositol and PCOS?

  • You should talk to your physician before beginning any supplements, not a board full of strangers on the internet.

ETA: I just went back and read through your old posts. You haven't even started TTC according to what you've posted previously. Don't borrow trouble and convince yourself that you're going to have trouble when you haven't even started.

I guess I should have expected this answer. I usually think about my posts for a long time before submitting. That's one of the reasons why I'm not a bronze poster like yourself (no intended snark). I was excited after reading about DCI both in TCOYF and in a couple of journal articles online. I didn't take the extra time that I would normally reviewing my post.

That being said, I'm not an idiot. I wouldn't just start taking random pills I ordered off the Internet. It's 10:58 pm MST on a Friday. My doctor is not available for consultation. I was simply curious about a supplement I read about in a book that is revered on this site. I'm not TTC just yet, but will be soon. I'm not trying to borrow trouble. I'm just trying to be informed. I'm sorry to have offended you with my question. Thank you for your response.

Unless you are IR, something to stabilize your insulin isn't going to be of any benefit to you.

Was your PCOS even correctly diagnosed?

Yes, I'm IR and have the correct diagnosis. I've been on Metformin for a few years now. I had a lot of testing done when I was diagnosed. Ultrasounds, blood work, the whole gambit. I have a lot of the classic symptoms, most of which were controlled by BCP. Now that I'm off BC, I was just curious about other ways to control my symptoms. I though maybe someone on this board would have had some experience with DCI, or had at least heard of it. Thanks for your reply.

It seems like lately a lot more doctors have been offering Pregnitude (which contains myo-inisitol) to their patients, but it also makes me wonder if it is just the lastest 'get pregnant fast' fad or if there is more behind it. It seems like the research is a bit limited on it.

I have been using Pregnitude (myo-inositol and folic acid).  I have probable PCOS (irregular cycles, anovulation, ultrasound showed multiple follicles, but have not done bloodwork) and my GYN suggested I try Pregnitude for a few months before we dive into all the bloodwork and more serious medications.

It's too soon to say if it's having an effect, but I did some research into it beforehand and it's legitimate.  I checked with a friend who's a women's health NP; she looked into it as well and thought it was a good idea.  It's quite safe, so there's not really a drawback to trying.  There haven't been too many studies, but the one's they have done showed good results with PCOS symptoms.

It's actually over-the-counter, so you don't need a prescription, but obviously you should still check with your doctor to make sure it doesn't interact with anything else you're on.  I couldn't find it stocked at any pharmacy but they can all order it, or you can order it yourself online.

Hope that helps!  and for the record, I don't think there's anything wrong with your post, if you actually know you have a condition.  Nothing wrong with being proactive.
