Food Allergy

MSPI - Further Eliminations?

Hi all, hoping you can advise.

My preemie twin was struggling terribly with reflux. A month ago, after being told time and again by my pedi that milk is "never a real factor," I demanded a pedi GI referral and was told no milk, no soy. Overnight, he became a different little guy. Much less pain and discomfort, thank goodness.

However, I've been noticing that he is still having some troubling symptoms. He still sleeps poorly and in short bursts. He rubs and itches his eyes some days until they are red and raw and some nights he kicks uncontrollably. He is also having painful, scream inducing gas in the mornings. I'm thinking something is still irritating him. I know I should keep a food diary, but with twins, I'm seriously over my head and run out of time to do it.

What foods do you think I should eliminate next to hopefully help my little guy feel better? Peanuts? Tree nuts? Eggs? Gluten? I'm hoping to avoid elecare if possible as it is out of our comfortable price range.

Thanks!

Is it possible he is having reflux, eczema or seasonal allergies? Both of my kids have milk protein allergies and struggled with reflux and eczema as infants. DD had to take Zyrtec to help clear up her eczema and to battle her environmental allergies.  Also, maybe just have the dr give you some samples of Elecare to see if it helps. There are patient assistance programs and both our allergist and pedi give us samples whenever they have them available.

  • One of my twins has a milk allergy, and one has a peanut allergy (and had a soy allergy which he has outgrown).  DS continued to have really bad reflux even when soy was eliminated...the soy made it worse, but he did have reflux separately.  Have you tried any meds for reflux? That's what helped DS the most with his reflux. Also, DD has eczema that comes and goes even though we strictly avoid milk, and it doesn't seem to be caused by another food - I think sometimes it's caused directly by the allergen, but sometimes seems kids with food allergy happen to be more prone to eczema.

Is your LO on formula? What type? My close friend had to switch to alimentum RTF  instead of the powder because in addition to milk and soy, she discovered she needed to eliminate corn (which many of the formulas contain). Might be something to think about.

    Good luck!!

  • There definitely could be someting in your diet still bothering your LO.  For us I had to go on a total elimination diet (TED) and slowly add things back in to discover in addition to dairy and soy my LO was having trouble with eggs and tomatoes (to acidic?).

Also, I know Neocate (an elemental formula) has a reimbursement program that you may be able to get help covering formula if that's what your LO ends up on.  And also, depending on where you live there are states that actually require insurance companies to cover elemental formulas, something worthing looking into:

14 qualifying states you may be eligible for reimbursement.

  • Thanks all. My LO is on prilosec for reflux, but is still having some problems. He is on elecare for the one bottle he gets a day, but I'm hoping to avoid - its so expensive and our insurance is a high cost deductible that won't likely kick in any cash. It is tough.

Happily/sadly, he was diagnosed with an ear infection today so hopefully that is what has been causing the recent troubles. If not, TED diet it shall be!
