October 2013 Moms

Sobe

H bought me a strawberry daquri sobe to drink since I can't have a real one.  I started to drink it then realized it had hibiscus and aloe in it.

I looked it up and yep, can't have that.  Apparently it's unsafe.

I didn't drink enough to be worried, but I'll be happy when I can eat and drink what I want without a second though.

It's so weird that aloe is no good! but I've read the same thing. I bought this huge thing of aloe body wash...it seemed pretty simple on the ingredients so I figured it would be fine. Yea no.
I use Dr. Bronners almond body wash now to keep the guess work out of it.

I think aloe topically is fine especially in a body wash. Its useful for stretch marks. I hope you're not eating it!

  • What's wrong with hibicus? I had a drink from Starbucks a couple weeks back that contained it. I feel like my doctor didn't tell me anything?
  • I found out aloe was unsafe to eat AFTER I had a bottle of aloe juice on my babymoon in Puerto Rico. Why do doctors not mention these things?!

Because they only mention the things that are definitely bad or could seriously hurt you or the baby. Personally I think the list of things we "can't" have is ridiculous and over hyped. Probably one woman somewhere ate aloe/lunch meat/soft cheese/soft serve/most everything else on our no list and had a bad reaction, and happened to be pregnant, and then the Internet heard about it and added it to the omg don't do this when your pregnant list.

I asked my dr about all of that stuff, and she said she wasn't worried about it as long as it was from a reputable place. Basically if you wouldn't feed it to a child or eat it when you weren't pregnant, use common sense and don't eat it when you are pregnant. Except raw fish and shark and those high mercury fish, she mentioned those specifically not to eat.

Did you miss the part where I said I wasn't worried?  I'm not.  I'm just saying that I'll be happy to not have to second guess what I eat or drink.

No, but things I've never had I will look up.

  • For reals though, the only thing I haven't touched since getting pregnant is alcohol. Seafood, bleu cheese, lunch meat, rare steak....it's all about moderation.

Let me start by saying that I do eat lunch meat but, it bugs the hell out of me when people say it's about moderation. No, it isn't. Lunch meat either has listeria or it doesn't. It does not matter how much or how little you eat. The same with unpasurized cheese and rare meat. They either have bacteria or don't. The only thing on that list that is actually about moderation is sea food.
