Ugh! Sperm storage fees = $$$$!

this is more a vent than anything else.  we have 4 vials at the sperm bank currently in 1 year long term storage @$350 (already paid).  we also have 1 vial at the RE that we didn't have to use (but always had to have 2 shipped at a time), currently being billed at $65 monthly (just got a bill for $130-billed quarterly).  to have the 1 vial shipped back to be w/ the other 4 will cost $300.  we don't plan to try again for baby #2 for at least a year, probably more like 2.  i don't want to have the 1 destroyed, b/c we just don't know if there would be enough vials from this same donor when we decide to try again.  it just sux, we don't have all this extra $$ to be throwing around :(

Re: Ugh! Sperm storage fees = $$$$!

  • I hear you!  vent away, we were paying $300 a year for the freeze my dh did.  Now, we finally have some snowbabies so we got rid of the sperm and the embabies are costing $900 a year to store!!  crazy.

  • We did sperm storage at my RE because DH travels a lot and we wanted to make sure that we were ready for any issues that came up.  And I thought that was expensive!  All those costs add up for sure!

  • Man I am so sorry. That sucks. My embabies are in storage, I can't wait for THAT bill. Ugh.
  • My dh has some on ice too. I can't remember what he just paid. I was surprised to see a bill come in the mail because I forgot he had some on ice. We better keep it there though because my DH has been known to have samples with 0 sperm.

  • What about having them all shipped to your RE?  We were considering this.  We have 8 vials from our directed donor at the bank.  Our RE charges the same rate up to 6 vials.  So we were going to have all of them in one place and only have to pay the shipping once.  We used Cyrobiology and they were great about it when we called to inquire about shipping.  That way you are only paying one storage fee.

  • I totally agree there are so many costs that I didn't think about with donor sperm. (Like the shipping and the storing). We probably won't try again for at least 4 years so until them, storage fees will just have to become part of our budget. Not something I had ever thought we would need to do.?

  • Honestly, storage for this stuff is so expensive!! To freeze my 7 snowbabies, we pay like $900 a year. I want to call them up and say, "Really, how much room are these 7 embryos taking that you have to charge us an arm and a leg?!!"
