Pregnant after 35

My girl is here!

Hello ladies!  I'm finally getting the chance to post but my baby was born just over a week ago.  Claire Alexandra was born on 4/26 and weighed 8lb 2oz and 21" long.

I was to be induced on Monday 4/29 but on Thursday 4/25 at 40w2d I woke up to a warm gush and knew it was my water.  I went to the bathroom and sure enough it kept on coming.  I made it back to bed and told DH and he jumped right up.  I wasn't feeling anything at this point so I knew we had some time.  We took showers and stopped for me to get some food and then made it to the hospital at 4am.  They checked and I was 1.5cm and nothing was happening.  So the plan was to induce.  I got to a room and got the gel inserted at 7am.  A couple hours later I got started on the pitocin.  I did finally start to have contractions and they were pretty painful.  My plan was to get an epidural so I was trying to hold out as long as possible.  That evening I think about 7pm I was only 2.5 and decided to just get the epidural because I was in a lot of pain.  Then I had about 4-5 hours of feeling amazing before it started to wear off.  I wasn't feeling contractions in my stomach but I felt it in my bottom.  It was a weird pain and pressure and contractions were consistently a couple minutes apart.  By midnight I was only at 4cm.  I couldn't believe how long this was taking and how much pain I was still in.  They told me labor would start to speed up and it did but it still took me till about 6:30am before I was complete.  When I was at 7.5cm I decided to redo the epidural. Unfortunately it had the same effect as the first one.  The thing I was surprised about also is that getting checked was horrible.  I was so scared of pushing because I still felt like I could feel everything down there.  The doctor finally arrived about 7am and I pushed for about 30 minutes.  Not gonna lie pushing was awful.  At one point my doctor said she was going to do an episiotomy and I screamed no.  She said the baby's heartbeat dropped and I had one more chance to get the baby out right now.  So that is what I did.  I ended up with a 2nd degree tear and I was told it was not that bad. My vision of getting an epi and having this relatively pain free birth just did not happen.  The labor was long and hard and just not what I expected but after it was over I was so happy to have my healthy baby girl that I would do it all over again.  Claire ended up with jaundice and had to go under the light for a day.  We ended up spending 4 nights total at the hospital.  My bp got really high during labor and its still not going down so I'm on meds for hopefully only a month until it regulates.

Recovery has been getting better everyday.  I don't think the stiches even bother me that much but the dreaded hemmies suck:(.   I have been so emotional and overwhelmed but its getting better.  I am really sad that bf'ing isn't working out very well also.  I had such a hard time getting her to latch.  With the help of the nurses and LC at the hospital I was able to get her on but because of the jaundice I ended up supplementing early on.  Since I have been home its been impossible to get her back on the breast so I have been pumping and supplementing. My milk didn't even come in until 6 days pp.   My dh has been so supportive and helped me to see that the most important thing is that I am happy and not overly stressed about this and she will do fine even if its only on formula.  I will continue to try to pump awhile and see how that goes but I don't produce enough right now.  The lack of sleep takes a toll for sure but I'm learning to nap with her as much as possible.

On to the pictures of my sweet angel.  I am so in love with my little girl :).

  • Congrats! She is beautiful! Don't stress about the breast feeding. I barely got a couple of drops of colostrum at first but DH worked with me to keep up with the pumping and I am finally making milk now, and using formula of course.

Thank you and I can't imagine pumping with twins so good for you. Breastfeeding is so hard and I still feel bad I can't just get it right and ebf. This wasn't my plan but I keep reminding myself my girl is happy and healthy and that's what matters.

  • Congrats!!  Don't worry about the formula.  She'll be fine even if that's all she gets.  I had to supplement DD for a number of reasons - didn't see her for 2 nights after the birth, she was not great at nursing, I didn't produce much milk, etc.  She's 2.5 now and totally fine and healthy.  With Asher, we are doing better with the nursing (he seems to have more of a talent for it lol), but I still supplement sometimes, and I had him on bottles from the start.  It's just so much less stressful this way.  I know how you feel though, with DD I felt like I was a horrible mother because breastfeeding just did not work out well.  I cried about it constantly and I believe it was a major reason for my PPD.  You'd think something so "natural" would come easily, but it often doesn't.  You are not a bad mom and should you come to the point where you need to ditch nursing/pumping completely, do it and don't look back (or feel guilty)!  Best of luck momma!

You are so sweet thank you. I have worried about ppd anyway because of a history of depression and I don't want this to push me over there.

Congratulations! Claire is a beautiful name for a beautiful girl. I am sorry you had such a long and difficult labor, but at least you avoided a c/s. The epi can make the baby groggy and make nursing harder, but any breast milk is still of great benefit to her. Even if you feed 75 percent formula and 25 percent breast milk, it's still worth it. Keep pumping and just do what you can do. I have known people that worked their way up to full bfing over weeks and even months. It's hard work but can be done.
