Help w/crib sleeping- rolls all over! Bumpers yay/nay?

DS slept in his crib, swaddled, months 3-4. Then close to 5 months he became very agitated in there and didn't want to sleep anywhere but his RNP, so I obliged.

Whenever I place him in his crib, he immediately rolls, and we don't have any bumpers, so he rolls all over the crib until he's smashed up against the side, doesn't like that. He screams a lot. I let him scream for a minute or two, before going in, putting him in the center, saying "night night," then leaving again.

He's going to outgrow the RNP shortly and already flips over in it if he's not tightly fastened in.

I was giving him a pacifier, but he now pulls it out of his mouth and gets frustrated when he can't get it back in. He sucks his thumb for comfort, but it seems like he doesn't think to do it when he's super upset.

I feel like if he had bumpers in there, at least he wouldn't smash into the sides while he's doing his roly poly game. He's very active and can roll tummy to back and back to tummy without any issues. I'd feel fine with them during naps since I'm awake and have a video monitor, but I KNOW they're not recommended and at night I would worry.

Any advice?

  • Hmm.. my lil one rolls all over the place but she will sleep in there just fine.. She loves to sleep on her tummy now :( but we use the Snuza on her. Anyway.. I just wanted to throw the idea out there of using a pool noodle cut to the size of the crib under the sheets on both sides. Maybe that will help keep him away a little from the sides? Best of luck.

  • Bumpers scare the bejeezus out of me.  I wish I had a practical suggestion to share.  :-S

  • Try a breathable mesh bumper? That is what is in my DD crib and seems to work pretty well...granite we have to pull it up on the crib when she pushes it down after she wakes up but it helps from her not hurting herself with pushing her head into the crib railings and rolling all over the place. Not sure if it would help your DS or not but just thought I would suggest it.
  • We use breathable bumpers because he was getting his limbs stuck between the slats.

Honestly, I wouldn't go in and move him.  He has to learn to sleep however he ends up OR to move to a more comfortable position.

DS just now got the freedom to move around in his crib and roll over to his back (long story).  This first night we basically had to do Ferber, because there's just no other way to let him learn that if he doesn't want to sleep on his back, then he's going to have to roll over. It's not practical to go in there every time he rolls over and roll him back. It took an hour of crying/check-ins and then he rolled over to his tummy and went to sleep.

The past two nights he STTN in a million different positions.

  • If he's flipping over in the RNP already, I wouldn't let him sleep in it any longer.  I would think that's an accident waiting to happen.

We have the breathable bumpers in DS's crib because he kept getting his legs stuck in the slats and I was worried about him hurting himself.  But they aren't really thick enough to keep him from smacking the wood sides and getting angry about it.  I have a feeling your LO may just need to outgrow the wiggling in the crib. :)

  • We have the mesh, breathable bumpers.  My LO has turned into a roller at night.  I put her on her back when I lay her down but she always flips over.  I don't turn her back over.  I still check on her a couple times a night by habit.

  • No bumpers.  Even the mesh, breathable ones are not recommended.

DS rolls all over the place and he likes to snuggle in a corner of the crib.  We put him in a sleepsack so he can't get his legs stuck between the slats.  Other than that, we let him do whatever he wants.

It may take a few nights, but your LO will eventually get used to it.

  • My LO is pretty active too. I didn't have mesh bumpers and one night she got her leg so wedged in between two bars we had to saw one to free her. The very next day I ran out and got mesh bumpers. they are breathable. They probably wont help so much with him hurting himself but at least it will prevent him from getting stuck.

    granted

    We use a mesh bumper.
  • my son was in the RnP till 5 months.  one night we just decided to put him in the crib because he was getting too big for the RnP (hes very long!)..and after 3 nights he was fine and LOVED the crib so he can roll around! we use breathable bumpers and they work fine :)
  • We do have bumpers in the crib which definitely helps because he does roll a lot during the night and we have seen him pressed up to the sides of the crib before. We have though the wonder bumpers which fit to each individual rail of the crib, are cute, and are nice a soft. No worries about suffocation and not getting enough air. You can see them at Buy buy baby or order them through gomamagodesigns.com. I would highly recommend them!

  • I'm also part of the mesh bumper club. DD used to whack her head on the crib and/or get her arm stuck between the slats and then cry.

We have a mesh bumper and they're actually a bit soft and padded... I know that sounds weird, but it's true.  Maybe stop by the store and check it out.

My son is all over the place.  Some nights he will do a complete 180 in his crib and end up facing the opposite direction.  His latest trend is to sleep sideways with his feet resting or in between the slats of the crib.  We do not use bumpers and he sleeps right through all of his crazy movements.
