my niece is graduating from preschool this year and i was just going to give her a check for her college savings, but wanted to do something more original as well. I just can't seem to think of anything. Any suggestions?
I do not feel that preschool graduation requires a gift at all. If she was graduating from HS go for it but its preschool. She is starting kindergarten in the fall. No gift needed. My older DD went through a year end celebration last year when she finished PreK and my younger DD will have hers next month. We invited the grandparents and 2 aunts/uncles that live in town but I don't expect any of them to come expect the grandparents but its the nice thing to do. My sister came last year but she has since moved. My SIL's both work and have their own kids (well one will anyday now). We had the cute little ceremony where the kids sang a few songs and then each had their turn to say what they want to be when they grow up and then we had a potluck lunch and the kids went back to class. No one got gifts that I saw and I think only parent brought flowers. Its just not a gift giving event.
My son "graduates" preschool and we aren't giving him a gift. I think that's a little silly. I think calling it a graduation is a little silly too but thats just me. We may all go get ice cream after since it will be his last day of school for the summer and DH will already be off work for the day.

This exactly. I really don't see preschool graduation as a gift giving event.
Re: preschool graduation gift
This, or maybe a new lunchbox for kindergarten.
