I have both kinds and love both for different reasons.
The push one is great when they are younger and you take them for walks. I love that there are restraints so they can't fall out and the sun shade protects little ones from the sun. Additionally I'm not the person who will take it apart a million times as the grow so that sucker stayed just like that.
He got the typical red trycicle for his birthday last year and he loves it. It's a good size for my now 3 year old and he loves the independence he feels on it. It took him a bit to figure out the pedals but that's part of growing up.
Not really much help I know, but if you are willing to spend the extra money and time on the one you push that grows with the child then go for it!
DS has the radio flyer kids steer and stroll trike. We have been very happy with it. The things I love are 1. The seat is adjustable as he grows 2. Easy for us to steer and push 3. The handle does come off once he's completely independent. DS does really well riding it and no longer needed us pushing by about 2.5 years old.

I got DS a Schwinn trike for his 2nd birthday and he's loved it. It came with a pushy thingy so he could be pushed befote he learned how to pedal.
Now that he knows how to pedal he's been using the pushy thing to dig up dirt. Hopefully he won't ruin it before we need it for DS2
