Natural Birth

TMI question, 20wks pp

Even though I'm more of a lurker, I made an AE because my other siggy is pretty noticeable and TB won't let me change it. I don't know where else to post this, but since I had a natural child birth and it doesn't really apply to anyone who had a CS, I'll try it here. Another warning that this is gross, and if you haven't had your child yet or are currently eating, you might not want to keep reading.

Anyway, I am about 20wks pp, and my H and I have only had sex three times, because each time is just as painful as the last. We waited until DS was 13wks or so, so  we definitely didn't do it too early. Today I grabbed a mirror and decided to check things out to see if I still had some stitches left and I see a red flap of something hanging from my vagina. It's about the size of a grape, but deflated. My first thought was a hemorrhoid, but I thought those were from the anus, and none of the pictures I've looked up have been similar. Anyone have any ideas as to what this is and how to make it go away? It doesn't really bother me except once in awhile it feel like I'm tearing a scab off, and then I'll wipe and get a tiny spot of blood. Otherwise it doesn't itch or hurt. I will probably call my doctor Monday, but I'm hoping for other ideas first. Thanks to anyone who reads this.

Definitely see your doctor.  Did you have a tear with stitches?  What did they tell you at your 6 week check up?  Could it be scar tissue?

I had three relatively minor tears, two of which required stitches.  But it took me forever to heal! I had a lot of scar tissue that was really painful to the touch and not healing well.  If I didn't touch the area of the scar tissue, though, I didn't notice it at all. I wasn't cleared for sex until 6 months pp, and it hurt for a long time even after that during sex.

  • I did tear, I think they said second degree. At my 6wk checkup, she said the knot from the stitches was still there and the scar tissue was developing around it. She said I just had to wait two more weeks to be cleared, but I never had to go back to get checked again. It is possible it's scar tissue, I just wouldn't expect it to hang down like this. Thank you again, I'll definitely try and get in as soon as I can next week!
  • You should definitely see your health care provider. I had a second degree tear that took a long time to heal. I had what I not so lovingly referred to as "Frankencrotch" for quite a while and still had undisolved stitches at my 8 week checkup but I didn't have anything like you are describing. I'm sure it's something they can fix. So sorry!

  • It might be a "skin tag" (google vaginal skin tag for more info).  I had one after DS1 (my impression is that I wasn't stitched up very well).  It never bothered me or bled, but I didn't like that it was there.  My OB never mentioned anything about it, but when I switched to a midwife for DS2, she asked if I wanted it removed after DS2 was born.  She said it wasn't doing any harm (just like skin tags you get elsewhere), and removing would just be for cosmetic reasons.
  • I had EXACTLY that but mine hurt with just walking. At my 6 wk pp check I told my midwife and she just dabbed on silver nitrate, I believe that's what it was, this was 2 yrs ago, on it which "burned" it off and I was good as new by that evening. Even by the time I left the office I felt SO much better! It was very simple.

  • I think it might be a skin flap from when you were sewed up. I have one (which I have thought was a hemmoroid these last 7 months) and I am going to call my doctor tomorrow.

My neighbor told me she had a very botched "reconstruction" when she tore (a student doctor did it, so I'm thinking it may have been practice for this student) and she had to have it "burned" off with the silver nitrate.

  • So on the off-chance that anyone will read this again, I'll post an update. I saw a PA today (my doc was booked up for over a month) and she said it looked like scar tissue that kept developing more tissue. She also said she had never treated it before and wasn't quite sure how to treat it but would ask my doctor, who was elsewhere in the clinic. I mentioned what some of you said about the silver nitrate, and when she came back, that was what my doctor had told her to do as well. So, long story short, burned like hell, still got a slight burning feeling, but it will be gone in a couple weeks. Thank you all for helping me not stress out about it any more!
