Working Moms

need daycare/preschool thoughts

DH's work schedule has changed so he can be home with DS in the mornings, until about 12:30 or so.  We are pretty excited because we could save money by pulling DS out for the morning for just the last 7 weeks of the school year (I'm a teacher and home with him all summer)

DS is 3 1/2 and has been going to PreSchool since September.  The learning part of the day is in the morning.  So, if we cut our costs, he's losing out on this learning part of the day - but it could save us $75/week which is pretty substantial over 7 weeks.

What would you do?  Do you thinks it's awful for us to pull his mornings now?  We're in a pretty tight financial bind.

  • I'm a teacher, DD was 3 in March, she will not be going to daycare in the summer.  I'd rather save the time and money for fun activities, she's smart enough and at that age they can learn from everything.

  • I would pull them but only if DH would agree to do some type of activity in the morning with him, like reading time, crafts, etc.
  • I agree with the idea that guided learning is a little overrated at that age, but at the same time I like suggestion of your husband doing constructive things with her that are similar to the day care learning activities. Little science projects and stuff like that. It actually could be really fun if YH is into it.

If you are in a tight financial position right now then do it. Your family needs to be financially secure before you add in "bonus" things like preschool for a 3 year old IMO. And I love the idea of helping DH identify learning activities he can do on those mornings. Then you won't feel so much like DS is missing out on something.

  • Thanks for your thoughts.  I think DH will be happy to do some reading and crafts with him in the morning.  I really like the idea of them doing some science stuff - maybe even outside nature stuff.  I also agree that structured learning can be overrated for a 3 year old.  They are learning everywhere they go and with everything they do.

    Thanks again!  I feel better.

  • If things are tight financially I would definitely pull her out -- unless dad is literally sitting her in front of the TV all morning, she'll be fine. And what a fun time for them!
