Pregnant after 35

LEEP?

Paranoia of the day....

I had a LEEP about 10 12 years ago. I read that having a LEEP can cause an incomplete cervix which needs a cerclage to prevent a miscarriage. I brought it up with my OB and she didn't mention a cerclage. I wonder if I should press for it. Has anyone else had experience with either a LEEP or cerclage??

Sorry for the freak out.

Re: LEEP?

  • I had one about 15 years ago.  They've measured my cervix four times now (starting around 15 weeks) and it's always been fine.  From what they told me, they're normally more concerned about people who've had multiple LEEPs or who've had them more recently. So just because you had one doesn't mean you'll have any problems or need  a cerclage.  I was really concerned at first too but it turns out it's really not that common for it to be a big deal.  Even if it is, they can identify it and hopefully address it in time.  Good luck!

  • Thank you so much for responding. I was freaking out bc I didn't know what to expect or if I should be more vocal. They measured my cervix at last visit and it was fine 3.something.

  • They should also measure it again at the anatomy scan so you'll get some more piece of mind there.  I've only had so many measurements because I had some other issues and had to have a follow up anatomy scan.  Sounds like you're going to be fine :)
  • I had a LEEP done two years before DS was born.  It was a shallow one, but OB didn't have to do a cerclage.  It just depends on the situation.  Your OB should just monitor you, but otherwise no it's not mandatory.

I had a leep 9 years ago.  I got pregnant for the first time 5 years after the leep.  I am on my third pregnancy now, and my first two babies were born full term, no problems whatsoever.

  • I had a LEEP over 10 years ago. I was also freaked out about IC especially with carrying twins. I asked for cervical length checks with my MFM at every monthly ultrasound for my own peace of mind mine was always long and closed. He stopped doing them around 24 weeks and after that my OB would do manual checks at every visit. I made it to 36 weeks with no cervical issues. If it's something you are concerned about, definitely speak your mind.

  • I had a LEEP same time you did and a little cryo a few years later, so I understand your concern. It was my main worry when pregnant and it ended up being an afterthought- my cervix was locked up tight and had no problems with it whatsoever. My doc also told me while I was pg that she had read in a recent medical journal that post-LEEP there generally tend to be few issues ESP in my case where it had been a decade since I'd had it.

  • I had a culp and LEEP in 2000 and it wasn't an issue with this pregnancy.

Also, btw, I had my baby on Wednesday! Still in the hospital because of the c section, but will post as soon as I can.
